Nice to hear. Glad to hear someone is happy with an i3 and a 2gb video card, after all the bashing of relatiely lower end hardware recently.

Yea, it is really cool. Not really something I would be interested in for a desktop, but pretty amazing performance for such a small package.

I had a Haswell DT i3-4130 that ran 800MHz at 0.52V. FWIW at 2.7GHz used 0.775V with a maximum pkg power draw of less than 7W running Cinebench.

Are you sure that 400MHz isn't 800MHz duty cycled at 50%?

More Skylake non-K Unlocked MSI Z170 BIOSes Available: 16 Motherboard Models Supported

t!n0 from The Netherlands has listed the unlocked BIOSes for 16 MSI Z170 motherboards. The BIOSes support BCLK overclocking for any locked Skylake processor, but have the same issues as we mentioned in another newsflash article. In short: no integrated graphics, no power management features and poor AVX performance.

The MSI motherboard beta support list now includes: Z170A XPowerGaming Titanium Edition, Z170A Gaming M9 ACK, Z170A Gaming M7, Z170A Gaming M5, Z170A-G45 Gaming , Z170A Gaming M3, Z170A Gaming Pro, Z170A Krait Gaming, Z170I Gaming Pro AC, Z170A Tomahawk, Z170A Tomahawk AC, Z170M Mortar, Z170A SLI Plus, Z170A-G43 Plus, Z170A PC Mate and Z170-A Pro.

Yea, but why settle for 4 generation old dual core performance in a desktop? I mean, that chip is impressive for mobile, but I guess i just dont get the trade-off of performance for small size in what is still basically a desktop. You are still tied to an external monitor and being plugged in.

NUC form factor is awesome, especially for casual users. We bought my mother a Broadwell i3 NUC as a kitchen PC. The small form factor is very convenient for her and the performance for what she does is more than enough.

There is a real market for these kinds of systems.

Its a HTPC, not desktop. Desktop is a 6700K.

Note that like previous tests, its not entirely idle. Runs a RDP session (hacked termsrv.dll) with Skype, ICQ, IRC etc. While the NUC also runs IIS. So its not a 100% clean idle system.

But the results shouldn't really be impacted.

Core is overkill for general purpose usage as it is; may as well get something smaller, less noisy fan, etc.

I don't think so. Web page rendering and other "basic" tasks still benefit from faster single-threaded CPU performance.
