Why would oems shy away from iris? The ark intel prices are not that much more, but does intel give better discounts on non iris cpus? Just seems too bad that iris is only available in a few high end super expensive devices.

The problem with Iris is that the branding is nowhere near as powerful as NVIDIA's GeForce. The average PC buying-Joe associates "NVIDIA GeForce" with "great gaming graphics." That same Joe has no clue what an Iris is.

OEMs want to find ways to up-sell customers to higher-end systems and putting in a dGPU, even if it's no better than what an integrated solution will bring, is a way to boost selling price significantly and improve OEM margins.

OEMs hate Iris Pro. Maybe the upcoming Macbook Pro will use it.

I realize that the i5-6350HQ mobile CPU won't probably make it into laptops anytime soon, but I'm also open to NUC kits or mini PC using this CPU. If anyone has info/news regarding this, please feel free to share it with us. I plan to build a HTPC soon. Thanks in advance.

Talking about graphics, new 15.40.22.4424 driver out.

Thanks Shintai! I'm going to try those right away, on my i3-6100.

Edit: Can't find those? Newest I see, after going to downloadcenter.intel.com , and searching for "HD 530", and clicking on "HD 530 for 6th-generation Core Microprocessors", I get 4404 at the top of the list, no 4424.

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/do...ows-7-8-1-and-Windows-10-64-bit-for-Intel-NUC

I searched for that version string, and found the download, but they say "for NUC". Will they install OK on a desktop SKL i3? And are they different than 4404?

Edit: I tried both 4404 and 4424, still issues with the HDMI handshake with my 24" HDTV monitor. Neither driver, will successfully "wake up" the monitor, WITH audio still playing. Sometimes I have to manually then turn the monitor off and then on again, and sometimes, the HDMI audio driver gets in a state, where it thinks it has hand-shaked, but it hasn't. The Volume control VU meter shows moving green, like there's audio playing, but nothing is heard over the monitor. Have to reboot the entire PC to get audio back.

Why can't Intel get this right? Is there some inherent defect in SKL CPUs? Both my NV and AMD video cards have NO ISSUE with my monitor. (They did, initially, when I first got them, but both AMD and NV fixed whatever issues there were within the first month of new drivers for both brands.)

Edit: When I woke it up this last time, it didn't have audio, but had the VU meter going. Attempting to change playback devices, and set the "Realtek Digital Output" (onboard SPDIF) as output, showed the VU meter, but then changing back to the HDMI output, the VU meter stopped. And stopping and re-starting my internet radio stream, just showed "buffering" (not a network problem). Like data wasn't able to flow over the HDMI audio device.

So I was able to fix it this time, without rebooting the whole system, by going into Device Manager to "Disable" the "Intel Display Audio" device, wait 10s, and then re-enable it, and re-start the stream. Why does Intel's HDMI Audio output driver "hang", and not pass data to the display?

Edit: HDMI audio handshake issue / problem / defect , EWM24F1Y1 , Intel i3-6100 Skylake

I'm still sitting on 4352, it won't talk to my Sony Bravia 48" TV via HDMI, but works with my monitor. Doubt 4424 will fix that for me.

Intel's New Skylake-Y 2-in-1 Reference Design

Expect many fairly priced Core M devices from chinese players in the coming months.

AnandTech: The MSI Z170A SLI PLUS Review: Redefining the Base Line at $130

...The BIOS has grown from previous generations, and MSI fixed my one major issue surrounding the load-line calibration overclock setting. It’s also been made easier to use, and there are a few interesting things MSI could do with the interface in the future if they have the same ideas I do. On the software side, Live Update 6 continues to be the best driver/vendor software update package available for motherboards to date. MSI is slowly deciding what to do with certain features (M-Cloud, RAM Disk) but for the most part, they’re easy to use. Just be careful with that CPU voltage dial saying 1.55 volts.

CPU and GPU performance is ball-park for a motherboard, and the system benchmarks showed the lowest load power we’ve currently tested from Z170 as well as above average showings in DPC Latency, audio, POST time and USB performance.

At this point in time, there’s no one area I can point at and say there’s a critical flaw. MSI has engineered a great motherboard that’s cheap, easy to use, comes with a few extra features, looks good and performs well. It’s not the best out of everything, but at $130 it strikes me as a potential best seller for MSI. $130 for something like this, and how easy it was to use, makes it more special than most. It also makes incredible value for gaming, despite not being part of the gaming range. It’s a new standard, and any motherboard up to $180 should easily be worried about what extra is being offered.

Is kabylake going to be on the same socket as Skylake??Was going to go X99 but think I might go Skylake if Kabylake is going to be a drop in upgrade for this socket.
Was eyeing up the i3 6300 to replace a AMD x4 760K@4.7Ghz.Is this a good choice and would it be an upgrade or more of a side grade?

Same socket yes. Kaby Lake is a tiny core upgrade and a bigger IGP upgrade (VP9, HEVC 10bit HW decode etc).

There will be a Z270 like all the others in the new 200 series chipsets.

If a mobo today supports Kaby Lake or not also depends on whatever support from the maker. So you are not getting a guarantee.

@Justnbailyman: Well, here is the benchmark from a stock X4 750 and a Haswell i3, anand bench . There is a pretty big difference at stock, and skylake will be somewhat faster than Haswell. *However*, at 4.7ghz for the athlon, the difference will be fairly small. I dont think I would bother to upgrade to an i3 for performance reasons, but it will run a lot quieter and use a lot less power than the athlon with a high overclock.

I also dont see the point of upgrading to an i3 and then to an i5 or i7. I would just stick with the overclocked athlon, save a bit more, and upgrade directly to a quad intel.

My advice is to forget about Kaby Lake and the "stopgap" i3 6100 solution here. Buy a 6700K + Z170 today and be set for a long time. 6700K prices are now down to close to MSRP on Newegg (~$355ish) and with a half-decent Z170 board (they're all good), you should have some really nice performance for years to come. Great thing about the 6700K is that it runs at 4GHz base out of the box, so you don't even need to futz with overclocking unless you just want to.

But to answer your question, yes, Kaby Lake is expected to be a drop-in on Z170. But I really don't think you'll need it if you buy a high end SKL today.

Justinbaileyman, there is a chance (nothing solid has come out to confirm yet so it's impossible to know right now) that the chipset that gets released when Kaby Lake is released might support Cannonlake. If you keep your rig for a long time and can wait, it might be best to wait until more towards the end of this year when Kaby Lake is going to be released, and get that instead. I've got a dying system that I'm nursing along, and that's what I'm going to do.

If it does turn out that Kaby Lake motherboards will be able to support Cannonlake, that would be a pretty long lived system. Just my 2c...

I'm just saying, if you upgrade now, all you'll presumably get is strong possibility some type of Kaby Lake upgrade. If you wait until Kaby Lake, you'll get full spectrum of Kaby Lake, and at least some chance of Cannonlake (and perhaps even beyond?) of upgrade.

If someone has a working well decent system and just has a little upgrade itch, why not wait until there is something really worth upgrading to?

Now, if Kaby Lake hits with its new chipsets and Cannonlake and later need their own chipsets, then, that would be a pretty bad longevity, even for Intel.

I still didn't pull the trigger. Its all still sitting in my cart but for some reason I just haven't been able to bring myself to complete the transaction. I dont wanna buy into a dead end platform even though it just came out.$350.00 bucks is a ton of money to me right now just to blow on a cpu, mobo, and ram just to have to buy another socket mobo 6 months later for Kabylake support.

Save your money then, buy zen or kabulake.
