If the Kabylake-X retained the clocks that the 6700K was supposed to have (4.2 full core turbo, 4.4 single core) and included the edram (with or without GT4e) that wouldn't be too bad.

Even better would be if they upped TDP to 140W and solder instead of thermal paste... hey why not quad channel while they are at it? That or eDRAM would solve any memory issues! ()

Well seems like DDR4 is slowly creeping up toward 4000. That should probably solve it, and we can probably forget about quad channel or any added complexity on the mainstream platform anyway.

I expect desktop KL to have another clock bump, since judging by SL + some process tweaking that should be no problem whatsoever to do. Upping cache sounds very intriguing but it adds (minimal) cost, and Intel is just. not. doing. that. because of margins. The best we can hope for IMO is the market moving on to more cores and Intel being "forced" to up the count to 6 on mainstream in 1-3 years.

Kabylake-U delivering a 300 MHz (base clock) speed bump from Skylake-U?

Geekbench 3 Scores

Core i7-7500U (Kabylake-U) operating at 2.9 GHz base clock:

Single-Core Score
3468
Multi-Core Score
7500

https://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/6794985

Core i5-7200U (Kabylake-U) operating at 2.7 GHz base clock:

Single-Core Score
3261
Multi-Core Score
6899

https://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench3/6743793

It's now clear to me what "optimization" means in Intel's new cadence: refined process to enable better perf/watt, which should mean higher base/boost clocks at a given power consumption level.

That, plus the new media engines should make Kaby Lake a far more interesting product than Haswell-Refresh.

So... will they skip the desktop K chips this time around? Or will the arrive, only late?

I have this creeping suspicison that they will pull a Broadwell and just not be hassled to go through the desktop verification stuff... But it would be more logical that they would do that with the fresh 10nm Cannonlake than with Kaby Lake. In that case, maybe they are dragging their feet in order to release the Kaby Lake K desktop chip between Kaby and Cannon releases?

Just thinking aloud here...

Kabylake-S arrives in Q4-2016 according to Fudzilla.

www.fudzilla.com/news/processors/40833-kaby-lake-s-comes-in-q4-16

No one disputes that. All recent roadmaps/rumours have suggested KBL for late Q3/early Q4. The issue is those -S chips may not be K series. If true, it's a useless product for many of us. Either way, anyone who skipped Skylake 6600k/6700K is unlikely to get KBL. If they found 4.6-4.8Ghz SKL an unsatisfactory improvement, they are waiting for Cannonlake, SKL-E, or even Icelake in 2018. This update is better for OEMs/prebuilds/notebook markets.

Based on the hype the preceded Broadwell, then BW-E, KBL is likely a fail anyway. MicroCenter now sells 6700K for $289.99. Anyone who has access to that should not wait for KBL. If unlocked K is not launching until Q2 2017, it will be a full year of waiting for a more expensive chip than what 6700K sells for now.

Agreed. I myself might avail myself of some 6700K CPUs. That is, if I decide to keep my ATX SKL rigs. Currently rocking some J1900 Brix units, but SKL is so much more "pleasurable" to use.

Not sure if that's a new roadmap, but Bench-life is saying Purley (server Skylake-EP/EX) launches in H1-2017:

If you do, don't skimp on the memory. Right now go at least 16GB DDR4 3200. It can be found for $85. If prices keep dropping, step up to 3466/3600. Skylake is the first Intel CPU platform in years that benefits greatly from faster memory:

Woah thanks for the heads up on the 6700k. I have a micro center right by my office. Do you guys usually know how long these deals last? Might as well pick it up this week as last time I checked it was $309.

Damn you Intel, that's so long after SL that knowing myself I'll get it regardless just because I'll be bored

Additional lanes for Kabylake-S?

Kaby Lake Core i7 7x00K series will be slightly faster. Intel is telling its partners that the Kaby Lake-S will have 15 percent more high speed input / output lanes. This is only four additional PCI express lanes and nothing that is going to change the world.

...Intel supplies DDR4-2400 memory support and it plans to teach its graphics a few new tricks. The desktop CPUs are expected in Q4 2016 which is quite late to the game, but better late than never.

More PCIe lanes(24 PCIe lanes max for Z-series) were already there according to early leaks by Benchlife:

Sounds good, Q4 2016 is way better than Q2 2017.

Oh thank god, I can definitely wait another couple months to upgrade to Kabylake-S and Z270 but there was no way I could go till 2nd quarter 2017.This is super great news to me and made my day. very happy camper now!! That whole AMD and Intel 2017 thing had me pretty upset for the last couple days.

Kaby Lake-S won't be overclockable though. Kaby Lake-X, the successor to 6700K, won't be out until Q2 2017 according to recent leaks.

Just go with Skylake, IMO. No reason to wait for Kaby Lake.

I wish Intel would be more predictable with the mainstream desktop "gamer" chips (K/X, whatever it is now). I like to plan my upgrades. Since HW it seems there is no info whatsoever on when the next chip will drop, it just appears (or don't). I'm still borderline obsessive about upgrading and some marketing and information could keep me that way for at least a bit longer....

That chart seems to indicate that X is on the E platform. Will there be a K KL at all for the mainstream platform?
