That chart seems to indicate that X is on the E platform. Will there be a K KL at all for the mainstream platform?

KBL-X is probably going to be on the mainstream platform; I can't see them sticking a KBL die onto an LGA-2061 package, especially given that KBL has on-die graphics and only dual channel memory support.

We might or might not see a Core i7-7700K this year, but if you're on the waiting game I think you should be looking at 200-series motherboards by now (October?). If LGA2061 (Skylake-X) is any indication, it might support Cannon Lake-S:

The new Skylake-W will use Kaby Lake PCH and with a four-channel DDR4 ECC memory, but this will also be compatible with future platform Cannon Lake-W platform. Information is still displayed Skylake-W will use Socket R, which is pin LGA 2011 (but it seems to change to LGA 2061), while adding four-channel DDR4 memory configuration may mean Skylake-X will also maintain the Broadwell-E the same combination.

Kaby Lake-S won't be overclockable though. Kaby Lake-X, the successor to 6700K, won't be out until Q2 2017 according to recent leaks.

Just go with Skylake, IMO. No reason to wait for Kaby Lake.

It does to me since I would be getting a Z270 chipset with extra PCIe lanes and faster DDR4 support.
Besides its only 3-4 months away now, not long at all.

The faster DDR4 support would be a function of the CPU memory controller, not the chip-set. Also the SKL DDR4 memory controller is very overclockable.

Extra PCIe lanes in Z270 I guess would be nice, but are you going to pair a 6700K with a Z270 board?

Faster DDR4 support to 2400? Waste as that's not fast enough. Z170 and 6700K can do up to 4500mhz today. Most budget boards can even do 3200-3466 and $130-150 boards can do 3600-3800. The only reason to wait is to see if there are any better deals on 1070/1080 cards and build the system/upgrade around that. AMD doesn't seem to have Vega on the roadmap until 2017 though.

1.15 GHz makes them the highest-clocked Iris Pro 580-based CPUs right now (previously it was Xeon E3-1275M v5's 1.1 GHz). 1.325 Teraflops! 21% more iGPU grunt (single precision) than Skull Canyon's Core i7-6770HQ.

Noctua showcases a Skylake-EP/LGA 3647 compatible CPU cooler

Below you can also see Noctua's upcoming NH-U12DX i4 cooler, which Noctua says will be compatible with upcoming AMD socket SP3 Opteron and Intel Socket P (LGA 3647) CPUs. This cooler is set to release in 2017 and has a mounting mechanism that matches the pictures LGA 3647 socket pictured below.

Would you ever buy something like this?

Colorful's B150-GP104 motherboard includes a Geforce GTX 1070

Meanwhile Colorful has showcased a very interesting design of its new B150 motherboard. It appears that it has GTX 1070 installed on the motherboard itself, occupying all PCI slots in the process. The motherboard still has two PCI expansions slots, which can be used for for SSD, Wifi module or anything that will fit into Mini-PCI interface. It also uses SODIMM memory slots.

This motherboard does not seem to comply to ATX standards, so I’m thinking it might be used in some custom-designed barebone PC, which are becoming quite popular these days, and have been showcased at Computex by few companies.

Corsair and G.Skill pushing DDR4 speeds, up to 4400-4500 MHz viable now.

Corsair And G.Skill Revealed Their High Frequency Gaming Memory For Skylake

Corsair demoed the Dominator Platinum series RAM to run at 4,400 MHz, through the use of company’s DHX Cooling Technology. In order to ensure better airflow and cool down the RAM more efficiently, the Dominator will arrive with bundled airflow bracket.

On the other hand G.Skill showed off its Trident Z series of gaming RAM, which can run up to 45,00 MHz. According to the details on the packaging the timings for this gaming RAM are 16-16-16-36.

Corsair noted that both of its Vengeance and Dominator Platinum RAM will be available in the second half of June, however, G.Skill did not provide any specific information regarding the availability of Trident Z series. Also the prices were not mentioned by both companies.

That GPU/Motherboard combo is awesome!! I have been wanting something like that with a beefy GPU for a while now. It would be super cool if they would release a game console style case for it.Don't laugh but I kinda like the Alienware alpha look and wish they would upgrade the socket for skylake and bump up the GPU with something like this 1070/mobo combo board.

That looks interesting and I probably would since that may be the card I want to upgrade to anyways. But that seems like a laptop board if it's built directly in. Seems cool, is this something they plan on releasing down the road for everyone?

It's a Skylake thread, so it seems appropriate. Not sure what averages people are seeing from the 6600k though. My guess would be 4.0-4.2 GHz? Maybe?

Odd. Must have been something about WinRAR. I wonder what? Though Prime95 and Tomb Raider might be more fp work loads . . .

It was 7zip, actually, but your point still stands. Literally worked fine until I opened a file with 7zip, then everything went to shit. Wonder if maybe 7zip has some compatibility issues with Windows 10 that pushed it over the edge. Regardless, thank you for the clarification, if it's normal for these chips to top out around 4.2 on stock voltages then I won't worry about it. I had some friends tell me I should be able to go higher so I started getting concerned I had bigger problems.

Why do you want stock voltage? Just curious. It probably needed a tiny bump in voltage and you were right on the cusp of stability.

Well, if Kabylake isn't getting the Optane DIMM support then I have to wonder what exactly the improvement/native support is.

Voltage is a mess with Skylake. Many mobos just deliver too much by default and even more when OC'ing. I didn't get any success until i managed to reign in the voltage by undervolting slightly in order to reduce peak voltage. Really annoying.

Those voltage controls sound eccentric, though you can experiment with them by trial and error. The safest way to go about it would be to set the CPU @ stock and then start undervolting it via offset in small increments. Use a tool like CPU-z or whatever to monitor voltage levels @ idle and load to see the results of your experiment.

I'm assuming the UEFI also has LLC options?

I'd have to say marketing. They are tricky like that.

That rumor of Optane DIMM on Kabylake seems to have little basis. It makes sense they'll have it for further future platforms and servers.
