So Skylake is going to be like 4770K with crappy TIM and terrible overclocker and we have to wait for Kaby Lake for a real upgrade? So if you have a 4790K at 4.8GHz+ it's basically a nonexistent difference is what I'm seeing.

Yep, but they used to do that before (~10 years ago). But in those days the difference between desktop CPU generations was also far greater so it made sense.

If they'd sell IB/Haswell at a 30% discount when Skylake is released, then I bet those would sell better than Skylake.

Given that both Broadwell and Skylake seem to be slow out of the chute, this would seem not to be suchj a bad idea. At least, Intel could keep churning out its Haswell chips, maybe explore cheaper options, which has heretofore been AMD territory.

Why would they want to enter AMD territory? Seriously though, why would they want to sell a larger die at a discount, when they can sell the supposedly cheaper to produce 14 nm skylake at full price.

If indeed it is cheaper, you make a good point. But since the startup costs are sunk costs, the chips they make from here on in cost them only the marginal costs. Now, if the marginal costs are higher, then you make an excellent point.

Yea, that is why I said "supposedly" cheaper. For sure for a long time, node shrinks clearly led to cost savings. But now, I dont think anyone really knows for sure except maybe Intel, and I think even then it depends on how you do the accounting.

The same can be said of an i7 2600K/3770K user @ 4.8-5Ghz or i7 4770K user with 4.5Ghz clocks. Chances are unless someone is already packing Samsung 951 PCIe SSD, at least 980Ti SLI and at least a 1440P screen, Skylake is kinda a waste of $ as it's a not really a good upgrade that will matter for these users (i.e., faster I/O, better monitor, superior GPU setup all rank way higher on the list and someone doing rendering/video encoding will want a 6-8 core CPU anyway). Most people upgrading on the desktop from a i5/i7 quad-core 4.5Ghz+ SB/HW will do so because it's fun/they want to play with new parts.

Even a rough back of the envelope calculation:

i7 2600K @ 4.5Ghz x 1.15 IPC (Haswell) x 1.15 IPC (Skylake) x (5.2Ghz/4.5Ghz) (assuming Skylake K can hit that) = 52.8% increase in IPC over SB but will games scale that well? Nope. It's even evident when comparing 1st generation Nehalem/Lynnfield clocked at 4Ghz to say a 4.6-4.8Ghz i7 4790K that games do not scale linearly with IPC today. Skylake is only 1 generation ahead of Haswell so it should improve gaming performance way less than moving from Nehalem/Lynnfield to Haswell (and that in itself is not even that large of a difference). On the positive side, most i5/i7 Intel chips hold their value very well which means it shouldn't be that expensive to resell old parts and get Skylake. Now is probably the best time to sell though.

And anyway, leaked info does not depend on the Engineering Samples actually being sold. Someone just has to have access to them.

When I worked at a consumer electronics company some years ago, the biggest leaks we had were from in-house at our own company, and at external partner companies. I.e. all the people that need access to the products before launch. They can easily take pictures, run benchmarks etc and then leak that info.

I imagine there must be lots of people having access to Intel Engineering Sample CPUs too, without having bought them e.g. on eBay. For example all OEMs; companies producing motherboards, laptops, etc. So after all it's a bit strange we haven't seen much leaks even this close to launch.

People that have access to pre-launch product don't talk about it. One, you are under NDA. Two, if you ever want product again, you don't leak it. Three, if you work for a company of any size, you will most likely lose your job.

Every NDA I've ever signed states you can't even say you are under NDA.

I have servers in my lab right now that won't see daylight for 18 months. But you will never see me write a word about them.

I don't think the Best Buy stock boy taking a picture of a DVD player is in the same class.

What you say makes sense, but actually the situation is even worse because your estimates of skylake performance are very optimistic. I would say more like 25 to 30% at best: similar overclocks, SB To Haswell 15% and Haswell to skylake 10 to 15 percent.

What games. AAA this year V and Witcher III run fine on Haswell quad+ (i7 for V). Same with Fallout 4 if it isn't delayed. You upgrade for what really. Haswell had better x264 encoding speeds sure but do you encode all day every day? CPU upgrades are increasingly meh. Chipset even, Z97 has it all (or H81 for cheap) except for M.SATA or M.2, neither of which are mature and won't be for long after Skylake anyway.

Just because a person has signed an NDA doesn't mean he/she cannot leak info. But of course by doing that person will break the NDA, which is illegal. That doesn't prevent it from happening in reality though. Just like making it illegal to steal cars doesn't prevent that from happening either.

So you expect people to risk their jobs/careers and financial future to leak info without getting compensated and without receiving any credit? Because the minute they try any kind of transaction or create a long lasting identity online they become targets.

Yup, and it happened several times while I worked at that company. A few people got caught too.

Not more strange than that people crack SW, leak movies ahead of launch etc, all taking risks without being financially compensated. I guess what motivates them is the rush of being able to provide stuff/info ahead of everyone else.

Interesting. So DDR4 is available for U series as well. I wonder how many will opt for that in a low power notebook, given that it consumes more power than LPDDR3/DDR3L? Perhaps intended for small desktop or AOI computers?

Also, is it really worth the battery life penalty to up the speed to 1866/2133 MT/s on low power notebooks? The slide indicates battery life penalties ranging from 5-10%, which is quite significant for what is likely rather small performance improvements. That is except for perhaps the iGPU, which may gain from higher RAM speed.

DDR4-RS uses less power than DDR3l-RS. Only LPDDR3 is better on the power front.

That TIM makes me sad, but from what I read the stock clocks on these things is pretty crazy already. I bet they OC good enough to be a fun new toy. Maybe. I could probably sell my platform and spring for a skylake setup in the near future, but 4 cores + TIM doesn't cause me to frown upon the ancient 3930k beast growing old in my box. My God, I could probably run this thing for another 5+ years and not be missing much.

Yep... If you value your job and/or your company's relationship with the manufacturer, you stick to the NDA.

Illegal =! civil liability for breach of contract.

Right, violating an NDA isn't going to land you in jail. You may be fired and fined, but not jailed.

If you try to resell hardware that's under NDA, however . . . that's the property of whoever provided it (Intel, etc) so you are basically selling "stolen" hardware.

Surface Pro 4 reportedly launching on August 28 - Skylake on board

Tablet PC Italy @ Google Translate said:
In areas of marketing and retail Milan begin to spread rumors about the launch of the Surface Pro 4: The new Tablet PC Microsoft would be expected to arrive in Italy on August 28, exactly one year after the launch of the Surface Pro 3.

The Surface Pro 4 would (finally) coming. There are currently no indications of any kind on the part of Microsoft, but certainly in the context of the "experts" more or less connected to the business, something is moving.

Accomplice probably the summer break - and therefore the need to do now that the work can not be done in a month - the signs are becoming more numerous and are all pointing towards a certain day, that of 28 August. It is, of course, for clues "between the lines" but in many cases are confirmed among them despite coming from different sources and not connected. It may not be the Surface Pro 4, it might not be just him, but almost certainly something Microsoft will launch in Italy in late August.

Indeed, making a few calculations, the date of 28 August would be perfect for the launch of a new Surface. The new units would have plenty of time to be produced and shipped (at the time still lack the final version of Windows from 10 pre-installed on the hard, which is why the new Surface can not yet be assembled in a complete and therefore will not be launched globally on July 29 along with the new operating system is the maximum possible launch limited to the US with a few thousand units) and slippage in August would also allow Microsoft to put new products on the new Intel Core sixth-generation ( Core i3-6100U, Core i5-6200U and Core i7-6500U) that may be a temporary exclusive Microsoft (similar to what happened with the Atom x7 for the Surface 3).

Clues and rumors - but significantly active. Perhaps soon we will see beautiful.

www.italico.tabletpc.it/2015/07/surface-pro-4-in-italia-dal-28-agosto.html

Microsoft's Surface Pro 4 might be the first Skylake-U product out there - 'temporary exclusive' (similar to Atom x7 and the Surface 3). Great news if true, sooner than I expected.

Skylake & Kabylake ditch FIVR, to be reintroduced with Icelake

The Fully Integrated Voltage Regulator (FIVR) was one of the greatest innovations of the first "Haswell" processors and is found in all current Intel processors. Already exactly a year ago, however, came to the first rumors that Intel could reconsider this decision and maybe FIVR will install only to "Broadwell" generation - in addition, there were at this time simply no findings. By integrating the voltage converter Intel wanted to simplify the power supply to the motherboard, previously still had the five different voltages to the CPU package provide: Vcore, vgpu, VCCSA, VCCIO and PLL. In addition, this step should allow Intel more control over the supply to the processor, which should also attract savings in consumption by itself.

But the FIVR seems to be history for "Skylake" and "Kaby Lake" because Intel plans these two upcoming CPU generations without a corresponding integration. "Ice Lake", the codename of the next generation should, then reuse a FIVR. Besides the fact as such a reason we were even called from a confidential source: Too high a thermal design power of the overall package of the processor. This seems to have a negative impact on the overall system to have had, because the extra heat must Intel savings elsewhere.

"Kaby Lake" chipsets will get integrated a native USB 3.1 support from Intel. The "Kaby Lake" serve -S processors that are fully compatible with the upcoming Socket LGA1151 motherboards and will be offered again in several TDP levels for the desktop market. Should be there SKUs with 35 Watt, 65 Watt and 91 Watt, where the last TDP specification are reserved exclusively for K-models and thus have a unlocked multiplier.

www.hardwareluxx.de/index.php/news/...e-den-fully-integrated-voltage-regulator.html

Awful translation, unfortunately I don't speak german.
Interesting, no mention of Cannonlake, perhaps Intel will skip it and go directly from Kabylake to Icelake in desktops?
