I'm currently on an "Intel experience" (3570K), so go ahead and laugh at that all you want.

Why would I laugh? 3570K is a great processor.

Anyway, the point I was trying to make is this: Intel very rarely drops prices on older CPUs, so the main reason to go with Haswell over a Skylake is if you want to save money on the platform (assuming you want to reuse DDR3 and can get a good deal on discounted Z97 boards that vendors are trying to clear stock of).

But, if the platform features don't interest you much in Skylake, it may be better to hang on to the 3570K until Cannonlake in 2H 2017 or Icelake even further down the line.

Or you could join the dark side and go X99 with a 5820K and get six cores

I'm not updating for performance. It'll be because I want to. Unless haswell becomes outdated somehow randomly, I expect it to be a great processor for the next 4 years at least still

The 10%+ in 3Dmark physics is quite impressive.

Well, remember, this is two generations, so even if the increase is overall (a variety of software) optimistically 10%, that is still so/so at best for a tick plus tock.

Edit: at some point I still say intel will have to increase core counts in the mainstream. I am not saying Core is not a great processor, but it seems they have wrung all they can out of it except for sticking on an ever bigger igp, which few care about on the high end desktop.

I dont think so. Skylake is faster and uses less power.

Yea and the sales pitch will be along these lines

"But sir, your webpages will load 10 milliseconds faster AND you'll save 4$ a year on electricity. It really is a no-brainer. Sir."

And then there's reality where 99.999% of the target audience dont give a crap about 10ms and 4$.

But would you buy a 4790K over a 6700K and choosing Z97 over Z170 if price was the same and you was in for a new system?

Well in that case I think many people might as well just get the two generation old Haswell 4790K instead. Especially those that do not intend to use the iGPU anyway.

Depends on if the rumors of Skylake supporting DDR3 are true or not. Im sure Im not the only one with a bunch of DDR3 laying around.

I'd argue the majority of users have mostly 2GB DDR3 dimms, and some 4GB DDR4 dimms.

With memory requirements increasing with each game, sooner or later people will need/want to upgrade to 8GB/16GB dimms, then they'll obviously take the faster and more energy efficient DDR4.

To be honest, based on the last few year's track record, I'm not that hopeful about Cannonlake either. And it's also a long time until 2017H2.

If anything, I think I could make use of more cores. Because when I need more performance, it's usually when doing video encoding or compiling source core. Both of those use cases benefit from good MT performance and many cores.

I'm not bound to any particular brand. And looking at the current pipelines I think AMD Zen might be the upgrade that suits me the most, since it'll be 8 cores and it'll also drastically improve upon AMD's currently poor ST performance. But it's still too early to say. I guess I'll know next year what it actually turns out like. If Zen doesn't deliver according to promise, chances are I'll be upgrading to an Intel CPU in 5-8 years from now, if progress continues at current pace. :\

In the meantime I'll probably be getting a Skylake Ultrabook though, since I only have a laptop from work and would like one for private use. I'm hoping low power mobile SKylake turns out better than desktop Skylake.

Depends on the kind of "air" you're talking about. On the stock cooler, my 4790K did run hot and the cooler itself was very loud.

However, with a Hyper 212+ EVO, my 4790K is humming along nicely at good temperatures, relatively low noise levels, and a solid overclock.

I have a 212EVO on mine.

I specifically mentioned "without using a giant cooler"...

Garbage. I've setup several 4790k systems using the stock HSF, in a well ventilated case, and during full gaming load, or full benchmarking load (non avx) temperatures are 85°C at most, at turbo boost clocks.

I did replace the stock thermal material on the heatsink with mx2, however.

For me, 85C is way too high. I would not tolerate those temps for my 4790K.

A 212EVO keeps mine under 78C for all but the heaviest loads. That's running with all cores at 4.4ghz.

85C would have me very worried.

EDIT: even the 78C bothers me.

Full Intel drivers for Windows 10 and Skylake

With the launch of Microsoft Windows 10 to July 29, 2015 and Intel Skylake platform for August 5, 2015, developers have much to do at the moment.

Intel also expects some of these outputs coming and recently formalized a dozen drivers who now support all Windows 10 but also for some of the sixth-generation processors (Skylake) and their associated chipsets 100 series (Sunrise Point ).

So, I'm about to pull the trigger on a new desktop, but Skylake is giving me major pause. Should I wait, or buy now. Not willing to wait past a month and would prefer to buy now.

Wait! You'll be glad you did..

I'm finally in the position to build my first desktop, and my finger is like a hairpin trigger. Would be nice to finally have that desktop for Blender instead of my oldie laptop. Painful as i5 is, I suppose another month won't kill me, but Nvidia's Pascal better not be due out in September.

Wait, only 2 weeks more until Skylake supposedly is released.
I made the exact same mistake with Sandy Bridge, except I bought my laptop literally a week before Sandy launched, though that's probably well known by now.

Since I'll be waiting, think DDR4 prices will spike once Skylake releases?

"Glados" Is A Forthcoming Chromebook With Skylake SoC, Now In Coreboot

A Google engineer has added support in Coreboot for Glados, a forthcoming Chromebook that will feature a next-generation Skylake SoC.

The "Glados" codename for a Chromebook Skylake device has been talked about for months now ever since there were Skylake/Glados references within the Chromium OS code-base near the beginning of the year. With now seeing support in Coreboot, Glados is still on the table and it could be appearing sooner rather than later, especially with the initial Skylake launch expected in August.

Glados was added on Tuesday to Coreboot via this Git commit. This Glados support from a Google engineer comes just days after someone from Intel added the Skylake SoC enablement support to Coreboot.

Skylake can't come any sooner! My HD just crapped the bed finally, and now I have an excuse to build a new machine after using my i3 2100 and gtx 460 for the past 5 yrs.

Ha, been using my dual core i5 and Radeon 5470 laptop for same amount of years too and I cannot agree more. Release the Kraken, err, Skylake now!!!

Though admittingly, the laptop will still play a strong role in my aresenal, it just won't be beaten into by my workloads anymore.
