I will miss the copper cored coolers that came with the higher-end chips, I used to save them and use them on i3s just as a little value-add. The only ones that ended up being recycled were the solid aluminum ones.

This^. They were pretty good for lower end machines, copper core allowed for lower RPMs.

If Intel becomes the only PC GPU vendor, can graphics have a unified instruction set?

That would remove the need for complex drivers with constant updates, right?

Abit shame with the removed cooler on K models. On the other hand, 9 out of 10 or something goes straight to the bin anyway.

The one that came with the 4790K was completely and utterly inadequate, IMO. A $30 aftermarket cooler was very much worth it for me.

Whether allowing consistently lower RPM or not (different suppliers vary in spec for the same Intel PN), copper core does allow less spiking due to quicker heat transfer.

Honestly they are overkill for lower-end CPUs. I just used them because I could, and figured they might add a safety margin at the extremes, which for my customers would be lack of regular maintenance (dust).

It's not a shame at all - it's much better for the environment this way.

I have mixed feelings about Intel leaving off the cooler. I mean, if they are estimating the TDP of an overclocked SKL-K at 130W, then I can understand them not wanting to provide a stock 95W cooler, and having people attempt to overclock with it and have issues.

On the other hand, sometimes, you just want to get the machine put together, and having to buy a 3rd-party cooler is an added expense. Plus, the Intel coolers are fairly easy to install. (Ok, I know not everyone feels that way, but unless the plastic locking clips are actually damaged, I've never had that much trouble with them.)

Are they going to be charging slightly less ($5-10) for the retail-box package, now that it doesn't include a cooler? Or is this just Intel's excuse to charge more for them?

Had in mind use the stock coolers for a while, wasn't planning on OC'ing right way or at least until I need it, that's another $60~$110 a cooler for me, specifically. Oh well.

Most "K" customers won't be affected by this change, overall it is the right thing to do.
I don't think so... in the 3rd world and people with low budget who wants a K processor might get affected by that.

To make it worse they are now giving the crappy aluminiun cooler to the normal chips.

----

BTW... still no news for Core i3, Pentium or even Celeron...
I am fearing that Celeron and Pentium goes to the CRAPtom path and the Core i3 ends MIA.

3rd world customers who can afford a "K" CPU can certainly budget for a cooler, could they not?

A fairly close copy of the Intel copper base cooler is available for $16 shipped, so maybe you should clarify.
Well not bad, I wasn't aware of those actually, some cheap Noctua or Cooler Master with big heatsinks aren't an option for me due case limitations, the only option is going for Watercooling.

But Intel must have recommended better coolers for a reason, getting a closer copy of the their base coolers wouldn't be any better?

With the recent disappointing release of AMD's Fury X, I may be holding off on building my new rig until the Intel 6xxx series releases. It seems the LGA1151 chipset is more iterated for gaming platforms, but as it stands now, the 5820k seems to be the better option still.

For gaming primarily, can you guys say the 6xxx series is worth waiting on or just go with a 5820k? I'm not seeing a glowing reason right now to wait on it.

It seems my decade-in-the-making intel aluminum fin shelf sculpture will never be finished. That's a relief.

LOL what?

I don't speak Chinese but going from the title of the article on last page it's about Skylake. So what price are you relating this 'inflation' to?

Read the context.

A 5$ cooler removed since Haswell wont give lower prices on Skylake due to inflation.

The only way to get lower prices would be adjustment for the world market due to the dollar exchange rate. And hence Intel would have to price it lower (For dollar users) to regain the maximum profit/margin/volume ratio.

Inflation alone will have eaten that up.

The dies will be much smaller which would easily counter inflation. A 110 mm^2 skylake die is barely bigger than a high end cell phone chip (estimate 80 mm^2 on 14 nm) which will cost 1/5 the price (i7 pricing) and those ARM companies pay the TSMC tax.

Of course, it could be that the economics of 10nm are tricky, and Kabylake will stick around for low margin markets while Cannonlake goes for the high margin markets.

IMO is what is happening. Node shrinks are becoming more expensive and harder to achieve, so high margin chips will get newer nodes first. Is what AMD is doing with Zen.
