Just read that the new Xeons (E3-1230 v5) won't be supported by B150/H170/Z170 chipsets because Intel locks them.

Any information why they do that and whether they might be enabled later or not?

Kaby Lake will trickle out in late 2016 (U/Y and maybe DT), but it's so late in 2016 that a Q1 launch of Skylake-E would basically close the gap.

Thanks. I was originally targeting upgrading the system in my signature to a 6700k rig, but then I thought KabyLake was going to be a late spring or early summer launch and was going to wait for that. Maybe I'll just upgrade my GPU early next year and hold off for KabyLake later in the year.

Kaby Lake is just Skylake with an improved IGP. No need to wait unless you want it for the IGP.

Yeah, I knew the IGP would be improved, but I wasn't sure if there would be other improvements similar to the Devil's Canyon refresh. Wasn't Devil's Canyon a decent improvement over the original Haswell release? Of course, I suppose those extra few percentage points REALLY don't matter.

Or the EDRAM. Look what it has done with the 5775c, making it better than 4790k in some games with dgpu, while running at 600MHz less.
Or blasting skylake in winrar or some emulators very memory intensive.
Now add the cpu performance of Skylake at 4.6-4.7GHz.

I don't think there were any changes other than the improved TIM and the multiplier bumps.

The successor to 5775C is a Skylake with 2x128MB, not a Kaby Lake.

Looks like Surface Book's dGPU is either GM108 or a die-shrink:

Geforce 960M
640 CUDA cores
80 GB/s
128 bit
1096MHz

Geforce 950M
640 CUDA cores
64 GB/s
128 bit
914 ~ 993MHz

Surface Book NVIDIA dGPU
384 CUDA cores
40 GB/s
64 bit
954MHz

Geforce 940M
384 CUDA cores
28.8 GB/s
64 bit
928 ~ 1029MHz

www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/3p2yrj/my_ms_store_has_a_dgpu_surface_book_what_tests

Will this solution be significantly faster than Surface Pro 4's 15W Skylake-U GT3e?
IMHO they could have chosen a 28W Skylake-U GT3e for the Surface Book, perhaps with a more agressive power profile when disconnected from the dock. That, or a faster dGPU (modified Geforce 950M?).

Can't wait for the comparisons.

I cant imagine a 15W GT3e would be as fast as the souped up 940M plus separate cpu, at least under full load on both the cpu and gpu. With the dgpu, the cpu and doesnt have to share its tdp with the gpu.

I hate Intel with all my might. There goes my freedom.

There are a whole bunch of links about Xeons E3 V5. Looks like the official launch is today. I still didn't munched all of it, but if the previous is true, is rather dissapointing.

Also, early rumours were that Xeons E3 V5 would support Registered DDR4. Looks like they don't.

Don't forget that these Xeons E3 V5 do NOT support SGX.

The Xeon chipset "lockdown" isn't new. They only get validated for Xeon chipsets. Been so for ages.

It isn't new? Tell that to people running Xeons E3 1230V3 on consumer Motherboards. This is totally new. Up to Haswell, you could run Xeons E3 on consumer Motherboards with no issues. Currently, they do NOT boot. And that seems to be intentional.

At least you can use a Core i5/i7 on a C236, but not a Xeon on a H170/Z170.

Did anyone test the new Xeons yet on something like Asrock? Did Asrock state that they wont add Xeon support?

The matrix isn't new. Neither is the usual forum panic and drama. My point is wait and see if something materialize out of it or not instead of a premature conclusion.

But it quickly turned disillusionment: None of desktop motherboards with the editorial Z170- or H170 chipset, be it from Asus, Gigabyte or Biostar, wanted to start with the Xeon E3-1230 v5. When troubleshooting talking with motherboard manufacturers and the demand came for new, compatible BIOS that supports the Skylake Xeon, information to light that Intel had not communicated publicly: The classic desktop chipsets are not only on the support of the Xeon E3-1200 completely excluded v5, they are not compatible according to Intel.

Yes, they need BIOS updates for even doing SKU support. Question is if these updates will be possible.

According to Combuterbase mainboard manufacturers confirmed the Xeons are „locked intentionally by Intel“ on the consumer boards.

This situation really sucks:
- Multi Core Enhancement has been locked too
- 6700K is not available
- 6700 has a weak turbo frequency
- 6600K has not HT
- 1230v5 is locked on consumer boards

I can't remember a launch fail like this in the last 15 years.

Where are the Skylake Pentium and i3 reviews? Are the dual core Skylake CPU's launched or not?

Welcome to the monopoly. DEAL with it like ShintaiDK who loves that.

Unless AMD or ARM becomes competent, that is only the beginning.

So you are saying there's competition or not? ARM and AMD are competing but Intel has a monopoly? Also Intel's competition aren't as good as the Intel who doesn't innovate?

I can't make heads or tails of your reasoning.

I said that UNLESS AMD or ARM becomes competent.... They are not competent right now.

So Intel has the performance monopoly at this moment. And also they are a monopoly on desktops and wants to be similar on tablets and phones. And if they can't, they take the whole tier down, just like they did with netbooks and Pine Trail
