I for one would be pleased. We need another player to drive prices down in the low-mid range. I expect that Intel would concentrate on that area.

I love the INQ. I heard the turds in my toilet talking about Intel's GPUs too...I'll post when I get more info.

Can you blame them though? I'd feel screwed too if the market dictated that I had to put two of my devices into one and only charge about 50% more when the gpu makers have figured out how to sell people two cards...

There already the market leader in graphics. Maby now there trying to get the attention of some gamers.

It'll most likely never happen though. Nvidia and ATI are probably years ahead of Intel right now.

There is a good reason ( actually a few really good ones) why DP Xeons don't sell well.

In Sales, not features.

i740 for the lose. I had a uber Screaming 3d (Or maybe it was a Voodoo I, been a while) before I sold it and picked up the i740 and boy what a mistake. At least if you enjoyed TF. Town2 was so dark I couldnt see anything, not even a flash. As others have stated Intel tried this before with the i740 and failed miserably. No reason to believe they would do any better now (Unless they merge with their wannabe).

Dont get me wrong, I would love more competition. YOU HEAR THAT MICRON, BRING RENDITION BACK. Would say 3dfx but they are dead, not sure who else ever made decent video cards other than PVR and imo they were more advanced than even cards today. Instead of the brute force approach, they would apply a little finesse.

I'm hoping Conroe will get Intel back into gaming. Otherwise I'm building an AM2 system

Intel has nice 2D for their integrated solutions and I wouldn't mind seeing them get back into the fray. With the huge amount of resources they got, they could easily buy all the world class GPU engineers they need to put nVidia or ATi out of business.

This is intels plan. You Buy their MotherBoard Their CPU and now the Their GPU. Hence the Viiv logo.

If that were true, why is AMD still here? Something about monopolies?

AMD is here but they still don't have >20% of the overall market which is a testament to Intel's marketing and financial power; with Merom/Conroe coming AMD is going to start slipping again. So far Intel hasn't taken the graphics business seriously enough but when or if they do, you can count on them taking out nVidia/ATi without breaking a sweat.

I doubt they would be able to wipe the floor with Nvidia and ATI, but if they went in seriously, they could make a nice third option.

Whoever mentioned the Viiv platform was right on the money IMO. I doubt Intel wants the bleeding edge gamer market, but the HTPC/Casual gamer market (myself for example) is still plenty big. Imagine if all those people buying 7200's/7600's and x1600's etc had a third option. Add plenty of features/HD support, etc and they could have a winner.

Leave the rabid fanboys to the graphics companies and aim for the soft and squishy middle. I can't see why they couldn't do it. If they manged to come out with something that would allow people to play recent games at middling quality, they could be a serious contender.

Intel's got enough cash sitting around that they could invest in some major R&D if they were serious about rejoining the graphics market.

BTW, don't forget that they'll have the first DX10-compliant graphics core

what does CPU have anything to do with gaming? As of preliminary benching, Conroe performs better than AM2 in gaming, and you can still pick the rest of the computer yourself.

Meh... Intel has a long way to go before they become a serious competitor to Ati and Nv. And I'm not talking about having 50% marketshare by cramming their IGP into every intel mobo. I mean having a discrete video card that can compete with the best from Ati/Nv.

Its DX9 compliant, but you cant use any DX9 features at all.

You could be right about 4 pipes.

IF it is true, it cant be all bad. As has been said, Intel has the money, the fabs, EVERYTHING to barge into this market. GPU tech is obviously quite different, but they have SOME knowledge of it at least, and it cant be 100% different to CPU tech, so its not starting from scratch.

I would be glad to see them try.
