Seems like Intel hasnt learned from its previous mistakes. They're still going to use Rambus. Read it here.

I see your point, but hopefully prices of Rambus will go down enough to make it viable to more people.

<< athlon 1.5gig with rambus would rock. >>

I want a toilet made out of solid gold but its just not in the cards now is it?
I just had to .

P4/i850 does have higher peak memory bandwidth than PC2100 DDR.

But if DDR implements dual channel too it will spank RDRAM.

Aren't they making MBs that support regular SDRam for the P4? Or I could just be smoking something . . .

You are correct AncientPC. And probably/eventually DDR RAM too. They'll be supporting all flavors, and let the consumer decide which one he/she wants.

Dual Channel DDR is going to be pretty pricey to make.

That's 128 data lines vs 32 in dual channel rambus.

Yeah some SeverWorks chipsets do it but they aren't exactly made for the low cost market.

I dunno about you but I think the P4 is expensive enough...not need to make it's motherboards 2x the cost to.

And single channel DDR wouldn't be enough for the p4 I don't think.

Rambus really isnt that expensive. It is at prices that sdram used to be at just a few months ago. It may seem pricey now but what the freak happened to my paying 190 bucks for a measly stick of 128 mb mushkin rev 2 ram still on the good ol green pcb?

Actually Rambus as a company is the problem not the memory. The problem with Rdram and the P-3 was that the P-3 was never designed to take advantage of the Bandwidth and didn't have a design to lesson the lentency hit that rambus has. The P-4 works in perfect harmony with Rdram.

Another thing I can't understand is where everyone figures Rdram is so expensive. It cost less than PC2100 DDR. The price hit is long gone.

I find that the performance of Rdram is in my opinion much better than DDR at this time. I also say that no matter what memory is available for the P4 that Rdram will be the top performer for a long time.

1.5 ghz isn't enough to utilize DDR SDRAM to it's full potential. I would not get a P4 without dual channel RDRAM.

Dual-channel DDR would probably faster than dual-channel Direct RDRAM. Of course the chipset would be prohibitively expensive to produce, package and test. But I would bet that it would be higher performing than a dual-channel Direct RDRAM solution.

Funny how people choose to only read the parts they want to hear. Sure, Intel is sticking with RAMBUST for a while yet, but as noted, they are also doing chipsets for SDRAM (soon) & DDR (later). They're doing this by necessity, they have that RAMBUST agreement that binds them. But Intel is playing it smart, letting others like VIA, Micron, etc., produce chipsets for Pentiums while they (Intel) are still contract-bound. Why do you think Intel is not suing these chipset makers for doing P4 chipsets without licensing from Intel? So Intel can have the best of all worlds, ie. support for all types of memory, without getting hassled by RAMBUST in the process.

Also, as noted, price has come way down, due a lot to that Samsung has implemented 20% cost savings in production costs, and IIRC, there have been some revision(s) that work to reduce the latency.
