The only problem I had with my ASRock was the CPU fan always jetted along at full speed. That's not good with the Intel fan and I used speedfan to set it to 50% speed. With a quiet HSF it would be fine I think.

the earlier BIOSes allowed for fan control from within BIOS

i guess they overheated
-especially when OC'd

fortunately the HSF noise does not bother me

DualVSTA is - by design - a "compromise" MB

I never had problem with SB Audigy2. It always worked with Any Thing I have used with it.
I just dont know ALC 888 (Built in) is better then Audig2
I do use 5.1 and mic. Speaker are just a Logitech x530 5.1 speakers
I do play lot of DvD Power DvD is a default player which decode DTS and DD.
Started to play C&C 3

A8N32 with an excellennt on-board graphics? Where?

(Sorry I had to pick on this cause I had used the board for almost a year in the past. Very nice board but sadly it doesn't come with a video card.)

I'm running my e6400 at 328fsb with the stock hsf. When my thermaltake tmg-i1 gets here I'll crank her up a notch or two once better cooling is in place.

I've been searching for an upgrade for the kids computer to allow for "improved" (kids word, not mine) gaming and, I haven't built a system since 2002 (the one below with upgrades as the components went).

Current configuration:
ECS k7s5a, AMD Athlon 1.0 GHz, 512 megs (things I would like to replace)
Radeon 9550 (6 months old, it appears that it was a temporary solution), WD 80 Gig IDE, Samsung 8x DVD/CD-burner (things I would like to keep)

I was leaning towards the AsRock/E4300 option with 1 or 2 gig memory update for around $200-$250. BUT, based on my digging here, I think I need to upgrade the video card as well since the Spiderman3 box says Radeon x1300 or Geforce7300 GT minimum. Any suggestions to keep the cost down ($300 max, but lower would be better) on this one? Time to rebuild from scratch?

Thanks!!

get a PCIe video card ... they are generally cheaper than their VGA counterparts [for better than low-end GPUs] ... 7600/7800 series are good from nvidia ... x1600 from ATi ... or the new AMD/nvidia DX10 cards are out this week ... look in Hot Deals

DDR2 is *dirt cheap* ... look in Hot Deals - also ... there are only 2 DIMMs so choose wisely ... 2x1GB looks good ... and if your PC3200 is 'quality' you can get a decent price for selling it ... now

i got an open box ASrock MB ... $25 from NewEgg just before last week ... you can see them off and on - if you really want to take a 'chance' ...

Yeah, look in the fs/ft section and find yourself a nice X1900gt, or X1900XT. Seen them selling in there for around $100-$150 and with that board set up, same as what I have you will get performance LIKE THIS

My X1900GT played oK on my 4000+, now on the new set up and the cpu mildly overclocked, my 4000+ can no longer touch it and all my games play at 1280x1024 with all the ey candy turned to max (FEAR, NFS MW, HL2) so I would think the spiderman 3 would play NP. And later today or tomorrow, will be glad to see if there is a spiderman demo out there and test it on my system and lyk what setting I can push it to till it starts to choke if you like?

If you know of a demo link me to it please so I wont have to go looking later

Thanks for the info --

1. I will probably go the with the used x1900 & the board/CPU above along with 2 gigs of memory (found cheap). I can see the kids having a "need for speed" in the not too distant future.
2. I do not know of a demo link for s3 -- sorry!

I will update as I go, but I can't do any more today -- Mother's Day, you know.

Thanks again!

if you want to reuse your ram, you could get a p4m890 based core 2 duo board that has both types of slots.

but then agian with ddr2 being so cheap now, you could probably sell whatever DDR1 ram you have for more than new ddr2 would cost.

I havent seen any benchmarks yet, nor overclock results of the E4400, but here is review of all the Intel Chips in the E and X class against one another.

Pay close attention to the E4300 when overclocked how it takes top honors in almost every bench surpassing the x6800 cpu. If the E6400 or the E4400 can come close to that when overclocked, cool, but best bang so far for the bucks is, IMO, the E4300.

Then I read this here:

The E4400 is a fantastic Core 2 Duo processor for overclocking as it is essentially an E6700 with just 2MB of L2 cache on an 800MHz FSB. Given both processors share the same clock multiplier, all it takes is for the user to adjust the FSB from 800MHz to 1066MHz and there you have it, a 2MB E6700 for $140 US. Not bad given you would pay much more than twice this dollar amount for a genuine 4MB E6700.

From here.

So you buy the E4400 so you can overclock it to become a cheap version of the E6700, Little faster the the E6400 you can also get as well, for the same price you say. Now stay with me. You overclock the E4400 to become a E6700, not to shabby, when you read THIS REVIEW HERE as the E6700 goes head to head with a X6800 cpu, falling slightly short of the X6800 in all test, but still a fair fight.

But then think back on the review I showed with the overclocked E4300 anadtech did. When the E4300 is overclocked it SPANKS the x6800 in all tests but a slight few game benches. In all other tests it just flys past the X6800 cpu which is their baddest chip. Why buy a E4400 to become a E6700, which is slower then the X6800, when you can buy the E4300, when overclocked beats them all

it is 'another' Celeron 300a .. when OC'd it matched and sometimes beat the flagship intel CPU at the time

you could have paid three times more for a slower P4

your choice

Well like a said earlier; I am not into O.C.
Those days are past of me.
My question was which is Faster E6400 vs E4400
Thanks Mir

your loss
Yes do.
Cause the only difference I know e6400 have over is 100mhz and FSB is 200Mhz is faster
So I do not know is any thing else is there or not
Plus is the difference is good enough for to go with used CPU!

Just get the E4400 and set the board's FSB to 266. Overclocking, overshlocking, there's no reason to get the E6400 when you could run the E4400 at 8x266.

You could even do that with an E4300. I'd take and E4300 over a used E6400 anyday, especially on a dual-vsta.

so If I hear you right; you saying dont even get E6400 even if you spending same price what you would pay to E4400 (Just that E6400 is used retail box with Orig Recipt)?

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking there, but I would not consider an E6400 in your position unless you know you want to use Intel's VT for something.

In fact, just get the E4300. Set the CPU multiplier to 8, set the FSB to 266, and relax. Buy a new one since they're pretty cheap.

ok I am going to stay with E4400.
I really do not see any performance in normal Usage
Matter of fact P4 was little fast on clicking or doing some thing
perhaps the P875 Chipset is little Faster who knows...
However WHen I play C&C 3 I can see Umph power it is really Smoother
