Intel X25-E Extreme vs Intel X25-M

I was checking anandtech benmarks and it seems like the Intel X25-E Extreme is quite a bit faster in some things. Why does no one talk about this drive? Guessing because of price and the amount of space you get for it. Keep thinking to myself if maybe it would of been better to get this even faster SSD than the slower Intel X25-M series ? Would it have been worth it?
Would anyone even be able to feel the difference?

The difference between the drives is marginal for desktop usage and the prices for SLC drives are much higher than for the consumer drives.

The price for a 64GB SLC drive starts around 575€ here in europe.. that's around 9€/gb against ~2.25€/gb for a 160gb M drive.


Better? Sure, if you want a bit higher write speeds, but the biggest advantage - longer lifetime (e.g. SLC drives have way more write cycles than MLC ones) shouldn't matter.. So imho it's not worth the price premium, but I'm a poor student.. there are also people out there who pay 4k for a PC (I'm looking at you apple )

X25-E is intended for professional servers running 24/7 where the improved life span actually is needed since the SSD is written to almost constantly.

IMHO, even 32GB is enough for a Win 7 OS drive. It installs smaller than Vista and you can disable hibernate and shrink the page file down to be just enough for dump information. You will have about 19GB free to do what you wish. I lived with a 32GB SSD for 8 months before I switched to the 80GB Intel. Space wasn't a reason for the move either. Anyway I have a home server than keeps all my data so I guess that helps obviate the need for storage on the OS drive.

Yep getting Windows 7 64 bit down to 7 to 8 GB is pretty easy. Once you add windows updates though it gets to be around 8.5 to 9 GB but still not to bad.

For best performance around 20% of the drive should be kept empty - so we're down to 26gb usable space. Many people like hibernate so that takes 4-8gb of the drive space, win7 itself needs ~8gb in the best case (and a standard install usually takes 15gb..) , so you'd have ~10g for applications and stuff. That's not a lot of space.


I'd take a 160gb MLC drive every time before a 64gb SLC drive..
