Intel Xeon X3350 vs Core 2 Quad Q9450

Are there any major differences between the X3350 and the Q9450? On paper, they look identical. If I'm planning on getting the DFI LT X38-T2R, will I notice a difference trying to overclock one over the other?

funny you should ask that, I have one of each. now, it's not a fair comparison since the x3350 is in an ip35 pro paired with a tuniq and an antec 900, while the Q9450 is in an ip35e with a cnps9700 and an antec 900. Right now my temps suck on the q9450 at 3.4 in a 21c ambient room, but it is with the zalman so I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt until my new-to-me tuniq arrives. my x3350 is happy as a clam at 3.6, load temps in low 70's/high 60's on all 4 cores running seti 24/7 with an ambient of 26-27c. vid on my x3350 is 1.0875 according to coretemp and 1.1125 for the Q9450. I expect to get ~3.5 with 3.6 a possibility once the tuniq is installed on the Q9450 but am taking a wait and see attitude right now.

interesting... i don't plan to overclock either cpu too hard. i currently have a free-to-me zalman 9700 that i was planning on using on my soon-to-be acquired cpu. the only thing is, i can get the x3350 now... as opposed to waiting for the q9450 to be released in retail form. (i have a friend who has a friend who has another friend who might have another friend that can get me the either cpu for 50%... i just have to decide on which one i want).

Do the quad core xeon procs work in the ip35-e? I'm guessing they will since the ip35-e supports 45nm dual cores and other quads, but what about a 45nm quad xeon or 65nm quad xeon?

No Xeon needs its own board, is has 771 pins if im not mistaken, therefore the standrad LGA775 doesnt work for the Xeons
And i wanted to know regarding the way it processes etc can you use a Xeon as a gaming pc or is it not very possible seeing how most things will be incompatible with it? I have heard that you cant game on a Xeon(or any server) chip for that fact, i just dont see how that can be true, yes server chips handle the threads better, and can handle more at once, but the true prcoessing should be very close to that of the Core2Quad, how accurate is that?

These are two taken from price list of one of the commercial resale places
They are 771 pin and need a motherboard designed for the cpu itself

There are S771 xeons and S775 xeons

X3320,X3350, and X3360 are all S775 xeons

The X3350 that the OP is comparing to the Q9450 is an S775 chip

yes, an x3350 is a skt 775 xeon. my 9450 is in an ip35e and the x3350 is in an ip 35 pro.

How come the Q9450 is so much more expensive than the Q6600? Is intel short on supplies or is it just a sorta-new-release overpriced item?

Hopefully it comes down in price by the time the P45s are out. I don't see why they would though since there's not much else coming out in terms of CPUs in the next few months.
