Toms Hardware: The Change to Megapixels

Regarding the Logitech MX mice:
Then an idea crossed my mind: suppose I called the Logitech mouse manager to see. I spoke to him for two minutes, explaining my problem with the figures and he replied straight off: 30x30 sensor, speed of 5250 images per second. So I didn't know whether to be pleased at having almost gotten it right or to kick myself for not asking earlier. Logitech made me feel a fool. They also have another interesting figure, which is the 40 inches per second maximum tracking speed. The MX is once more ahead, because older sensors were below 20.

So it looks like 400dpi mice move up to 20 inches per second. Does this really mean the MX mice are superior to the Intellimouse 3.0 series, no.

he is wrong 510mx's have highier resolution I belive 5.8mp over 5.3mp of the 500mx

i think its 4.7 to 5.8mp for 510.

dpi matters. intellimouse isn't even close. speedwise, ergnomoically, build quality...

the mx310. the sensors what matters. the 310 doesnt have many buttons but its quite usable. the button on the right side is for lefties, its a symetrical mouse for both hands just as the 300 was.

i have mx700, mx 310, intellimouse explorer 3.0.. the mx mice are simply smoother. the fit and finish are just great on the mx700, seams are tiny and buttons and mouse body are one. the mx310 is more like the intelliomouse since its buttons are separate from body. its mostly an asthetic thing so no biggie. i do however like the extra buttons and wireless, but that comes at a cost $$

mouse specs aren't comparable to lcds. some lcd specs have no standard of measure. numbers such as contrast mean little as manufacturers measure them in different ways, different distances etc. dpi is dpi.

oh, don't forget teflon tape and a good mousepad. a company called cshyde sells good stuff cheap.

i would personally go for the intellimouse explorer 4.0. the logitech mx mice track nice, but they just dont fit my hand the way i would like. the intellimouse 4.0 has an 800dpi sensor just like the mx510 i believe, and it also has the silky smooth scrollling action. plus you can get the 4.0 from livewarehouse.com for $25 shipped. the cheapest i could personally find the mx510 was like around $40. Either the mx510 or the 4.0 would probably make you happy, but i wouldnt go with the intellimouse explorer 3.0 tho. I have two of them and i have really liked them over the years. But alas, as others have said, they are getting a bit "long in the tooth" so to speak. They just arent as precise.

Good luck with your decision

PS - go to a B&M store and see how the mice you are considering fit your hand. Honestly the ergonomics are the most important, because both current offerings from MS and logitech offer quite similar performance !

Do any of the microsoft mice have an 800 dpi rating? I thought they were all 400dpi, even the new ones.

Anyways I got a MX510 this weekend and it is a wonderful mouse, much better than the Intellimouse 4.0 my friend bought, imo. It is noticibily smoother upon first use. Also it has a great finish, which is not like the normal paint most mice use. It will not start to wear out like the MX700 finish.

teflon coated tape you stick on the mouse feet to prevent wear and to lower friction. search the web for cshyde ..they got some cheap. c4 mouse pads are good too.

IIRC, you can only get the marbled red one.

I LOVE my MX510. I had the Wireless Optical MS Intellmouse before, and it was the worst POS Mouse I've EVER experienced. As for color I had read somewhere that, blue and other colors will be coming out in the next month or so, when everyone starts selling them. Best Buy had exclusive rights to sell it b4 anyone else a couple months ago, but it was only the red one.

Ah crud, now I have to go out and buy the mx510, I have the mx500 but with all I am hearing about the mx510 it is even better. I have intellimouse 3 and the wireless intellimouse both have crapped out on me, might have just been bad luck but my mx500 has been going strong for about 2 years now I think.

The actualy numbers mean nothing at all too me. I've owned a MX500 and I've gone back to my MIE3.0. I just couldn't stand negative accel at all even with the mouse accel fix.

OK.. for the peeps who have used both mice, which one "clicks" more quietly? This might just tilt the scales for me

I got the Microsoft, & i really prefer the appearance & contour of it over the MX 500/510, but the MX is definately better for precision gaming.

Just got the MX510. Was going to give it a pass since I already had the MX500 and didn't really except to notice a difference, but BestBuy has them on sale this week for $39.95 and I still had some funds on a gift card I wanted to use up.

I have to admit, it's ever so slightly better in almost every way. It does feel more precise and the construction of the unit definitely feels a little bit more solid than any of my MX500s. This is probably attributed to the hard, acrylic-like material they're using for the casing. Anyway, I'm glad I got it.

How much does all this accuracy/precision actually help in games?
I'm gonna say get yourself an optical mouse that you feel comfortable holding and then work on your skill in the game. Comfort while playing, or working even, can make all the difference in the world. When you're good enough (you will know when that happens) spend/waste the money on expensive hardware.

EDIT: Let the flaming begin?

i've owned about 5 logitech mice and a joystick
the mx300 and mx310 were both good mice (i couldn't really notice the difference between them)
my girl friend uses MS mice, and i guess they aren't too bad either..
i plan to get an mx510 when i can actually find them for sell places (mx510 is the best right now)
the mx310 is definately worth the price too if you can't afford the mx510, you prob won't even use all the buttons on most these mice anyways
