interested in linux..

im thinking of installing linux on an older computer of mine that i have not been using, i just wanna try linux and learn a bit about using it. im going to buy it on ebay because i cannot download it using a dialup connection., but

im interested in mandrake linux. on ebay i see 2 versions, one is "Blue Katana (Mandrake) Linux 8.2" and the other is "Mandrake Linux 8.2 / 4 cdrom set x86 ". what is the difference and which one do you reccomend to a new user?

Not sure but instead of Ebaying the CDs try checking out places like http://www.cheapbytes.com. They've been around for years and sell copies of Linux/BSD CDs for very little money. Though since you're just starting out you may want to get the full packages with manuals, support, etc.

I'd recommend the 4 CD set version, as you are on a dialup connection this will assist you because you won't have to download as much software. You will just be able to pop one of the CDs with software on them to install them. Mandrake is my choice of Linux, I run it on my iMac and it was one of the easiest installs I've ever done on my iMac. Good luck.

Cheapbytes is the way to go. I would go with RedHat 7.3 though, but that's just me. I've just seen too many people having problems with Mandy. If you really got into Linux, you would probably wish you hadn't used Mandrake. I do have to say that Mandrake has some hella device support though, but then again so does SuSE. Anyways....

The first time I tried linux was Redhat 7 . I payed a $40 for a guide book for linux and it came with a 4 cd set . It may have not been worth it (the book not RedHat (although version 7 was a bit of a dog)), but the book was helpful when I screwed up my computer (quite often (I am not afraid to be stupid)) and lost my internet connection.

Yea, you want to get a good book. I'd Recommend Running Linux 3rd Edition. Its published by O'Reilly
