Interesting Circuit City Story

So I totally hate Circuit City, but decided to buy my new wireless router from them, the Buffalo G54 since they have such an awesome deal on it right now. I went to pick it up in store today, and they took forever, then gave me a G 125. I didn't say anything, but just took it, because I thought it might be possible that the G 125 is a better router. I got home and got a message saying the G54 wasn't in stock, so I guess the person at the store was just an idiot (big surprise).

Anyway, from looking at their descriptions, I can't really tell what the difference is between the routers. Can anyone tell me if I got a better deal, or if I should return the G 125 and demand the G54?

The WHR - G54S and the WHR-HP-G54 both operate at 125 speed if used with compatable gear. They are sometimes called the G125, but that is not the model number. The HP model has greater range with less static.

What is the model number of your unit?

Yeah, look on the bottom edge side of the box( tiny letters in a white patch and the UPC). The WHR-G54S on sale at CC does not have the Model number on the front of the box.

Also, look at the support download section of the Buffalo site, they also use the long-winded front box description, "Wireless-G 125 high speed Broadband router and Access point", to identify the unit. Their weird marketing department seems to have a phobia about numbers for descriptions of model NUMBERS.

Looks like the marketing dept. has indeed taken over the front of the box, and the info on the web site. I have a WHR-G54S (the $25 one at CC) that I got a year ago for $45 from newegg. It has worked fine for the whole time. It was a good deal for $45 and a better deal for $25.

Most functions work out of the box with the stock firmware, but if you want to get fancy, it accepts WRT firmware.

I've always found the local CC to be a normal retail store. The one I can't stand is Best Buy. Thier standard treatment of customers locally was so insulting that I quit going into thier stores 2 years ago.

It seems that Buffalo is going to shuffle their line, or just renaming this specific unit.

The Box is labeled as Wireless-G 125, the actual unit inside is WHR - G54S.

If you buy it at the store the cash register spits out the Reabte.

The guy in the store tired to convince me to buy the Netgear108, he said that it is 10x better.:laugh::roll::evil:

To the best of my knowledge the G125 routers were just 54g with an option to run at a slightly speed when used with compatible wireless adapters. I had a Belkin G125 router & adapter that would indicate that it was connected at 125mbs but in reality was only slightly faster then standard 54g except for small bursts.. it was fine considering I got it for free but I wouldn't have paid any extra for it.
