Take them with a grain of salt as I can't speak to the validity, but interesting nonetheless

* One Top Fuel Dragster 500 inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first four rows (eight cars) at the Daytona 500

* Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1 ½ gallons of nitromethane per second. A fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced

* A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine does not make enough power to turn the dragster?s supercharger

* With 3000 cfm of air being rammed in by the overdriven supercharger, the fuel mixture is compressed in to a nearly solid form before ignition

* Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle

* At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitromethane, the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.

* Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, disassociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gasses

* Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder. Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After ½ way, the engine is dieseling from compression, rather than firing on the ignition, aided by the red-hot glow of the exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down at this point by cutting the fuel flow.

* If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.

* In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate at an average of over 4 g?s.

* In order to reach 200 mph well before half track, the launch acceleration approaches 8 g?s.

* Dragsters reach 300 mph before you can finish reading this sentence

* Top fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from start to finish line

* Including the burnout the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load

* The redline is actually quite high at 9,500 rpm.

* The Bottom Line: Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated US $1,000 per second.

* The current Top Fuel elapsed time record is 4.441 seconds for the quarter mile (10/05/03 Tony Schumacher)

* The top speed record is 333.00 mph as measured over the last 66 feet of the run. (9/28/03 Doug Kallita)

* Putting all of this into perspective: You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter Twin Turbo Z06 Corvette. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down the quarter mile as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the ?Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The tree goes green for both of you at that moment. The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him

* Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race course.

That name is somewhat interesting.

Power output of these engines is most likely somewhere between 6000 and 8000 horsepower (approximately 4500-6000 kilowatts). This is calculated from performance as a dynamometer capable of measuring power output of these magnitudes has yet to be built. This would suggest a torque output of 5100-6750 Nm (3760-4980 lb-ft) and also a brake mean effective pressure of 80-100 bar.

True story...

My business partner saw one a dragster for sale at auction, and it happened to be one of Don Garlits first designs. He bought it and took it to a car show, and the next morning at 7AM someone knocks on the door of the camper. It's Don Garlits.

The ensuing conversation happened.

"Hey Jim, wake up! Don Garlits is here to see you!"
"Oh fsck you I'm going back to sleep."
"I'm serious he's right outside"
"Yeah right, like Don Garlits is outside this RV waiting to see me...."

After about an hour, he wakes up and peeks out the window. He's still waiting for him outside the camper having coffee and donuts. He heads out and talks with the guy and he gives him a verbal history of that dragster.

I laughed my ass off at this one.

I'm surprised you didn't make this a thread in itself....

Uhh, who takes 4.5 seconds to read that sentence? Cool facts though.

If you've never been to a national event and seen the Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars run, you really need to go at least once.

And take my word for it......bring some hearing protection. The over-the-ear type.....not plugs.

They are so loud, that if you're next to the starting line when they launch, you could have Van Halen, Metallica and The Who all playing at their loudest right behind you and you wouldn't be able to hear the bands.

That's true.

I was at the pits when they fired up a top fuel dragster. Even though I had hearing protection on when they fired up the engine it made me jump back about 3 feet. Everybody was laughing at me.

But the sound is soo loud it felt like I was pounded in the chest. Ohh, and don't breath in those fumes - it's like a cloud of acid.

Every time someone posts the dragster factoids I always add this: In a 1/4 mile a TF dragster draws into the engine as much air as it would take to fill the Goodyear blimp. I forget where I saw that, but it has always stuck with me and if its true, it is amazing as hell.

I went to the first NHRA National event held at Sears Point in the 80's and had never been around TF cars, so I didn't bring any hearing protection at all. I had seats right on the starting line. I couldn't hear anything until Thursday, 4 days later. And I wanted to cut my head off from the ensuing headache from the noise. It was awesome!

There was a time in my life (late 80s to mid-90s) when I was a Top Fuel fanatic. I would frequently attend the NHRA races at Houston Raceway Park and The Texas Motorplex. I was there at The Texas Motorplex in April, 1988, to watch Eddie Hill run the first-ever sub-5 second 1/4 mile (it was a 4.990). Later on, I witnessed the first race where both competing drivers ran in the 4s, side-by-side. I still fondly recall both of those events.

An additional factoid about Top Fuel dragsters: I've read that it takes 350-450 horsepower just to turn the 14-71 superchargers they use!!

I guess that makes this reasonable then:

* A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine does not make enough power to turn the dragster?s supercharger

I went to Maple Grove here in PA, last year and can't wait for them to come here again. It is probably the coolest motor sport that I have seen. The sounds alone almost seal the deal.

I seen on speed channel or something about tractor pulls that they burn about 15 gallons per pull, which would be about a gallon per 20 feet. I'm not sure the exact numbers but it was something like that.

Yeah, but they have multiple, larger cube engines to burn that much fuel. A TF dragster only has one..and it's only 499 cid, IIRC.

What percentage of Nitro do they run anyway?

Where does the engine lubrication come from? I assume they are 4-stroke? I had no idea they only turned 200 something revolutions in a run.
