He did not ask that, but he asked if I was married...I said no. He said he likes to do dinner with his wife and his associates and their wives once a month so I should start looking into a wife soon or else the dinners are going to be awkward. I had to laugh at that.

Well at least you know he keeps it real when he's telling you that he likes to scope his colleagues' wives to bang.

Also... definitely not allowed to ask that question.

maybe they already have identified a candidate and are just going through the motions of interviewing others?

yeah, no. Partners who bill at $500 - $800 an hour don't go through motions. This isn't a government position where they are REQUIRED to post a competitive exam.

You'd think a lawyer would know better than to ask a question that could potentially get them sued. But he sounds like he doesn't really give a shit about all that. Tough choice, but I think I'd pass. It's just not worth it to completely give up your life for 5 years to chase money.

It was consistent with his "I'm a badass" persona. Definitely had a "I'm untouchable" angle to him...I learned from another partner that he has the biggest book of business and was promoted to equity partner faster than anyone in firm history so I think he has a little strut in his step.

Regardless, even in my current position, I work 50 hours per week (pretty much the norm). He said most employees do 9 am - 7 pm when they get efficient enough, which is basically my schedule now.

Id rather be stressed out with money than be stressed out for not having money.

Pick one.

Sounds like a place where you basically turn over your life for 2-5 years, make a shitload of money, pay off your bills/beef up your savings, and then cashout for an easier job.

Yep! I worked at large firms for 9yrs - now in Corporate. Building the resume is important and I would not be where I am today if I did not do my time.

Once you get an offer, if you arre still unsure - have lunch with some of the senior associates in a group setting and ask them what they think.

Sounds like the kind of job you're like "yeah!" but then a few years down the line on your new prescription for blood pressure you realize you've blown most of your waking life chasing money that can't buy back your children's younger years or your wife before she was a hopeless drunk.

Take the job. You can use your newfound wealth to treat your mental instability at a shrinks. win-win.

Are you fucking serious? That kinda shit sounds like it belongs in a movie. If what you say is true, then I'd run the fuck away from that soul-sucking-pile-of-shit. Agreed on calling that interview "interesting" though, haha.

I'm in too deep...going on 5 years. The game plan is stack some cash for the next 10 years and then explore other options (something along the lines of consulting).

I work in finance for a large insurer. Many recovering lawyers take the same path - I work with a few. I highly suggest it, or something in the insurance industry in general. It's nice because the whole industry is this big, slow dinosaur that has managed to remain very profitable and is now just starting to modernize. A lot of companies are skewing older, too, so there is a ton of opportunity.

I have a 1 year old and I love going to pick her up at 4:30-5:00 every day.

^^

That's exactly what I would do.

sounds like it could be an awesome opportunity, but also you'd be selling your soul while there and working long ass hours.

depends on your priorities - do you want to trade money now for no time and lots of stress, or take something that has a more equal balance?

i traded a little more time at work for a much more rewarding job. stress level is probably a little bit higher, but not very much so. definitely made the right move in coming out here to LA.

good luck with your choice(s)!

50 hours isn't so bad. Don't think I'd like to work with a bunch of cunts though. You kind of already seem like a wise and beautiful woman so you'll probably fit right in. :awe:
