Interesting OC results from g3

Hey guys, I've been playing around with my Gainward Geforce3 TI 200 and I came up with very strange results! Take a look:

stock= 175/400: 6508
highest mem w/ core at 175 = 175/519: 6711
highest core w/ mem at 400 = 251/400: 7087
highest core with mem at 519 = 215/519: 7217
this is where it gets interesting:
251/480: 7525
251/490: 7460!
251/501: 7433!!
ran it again at 251/480: 7523!!
ran it again at 251/501: 7433!!!
251/471: 7397
251/484: 7363
251/478: 7544, ran again: 7528
251/475: 7419
251/482: 7432
I run now run it 24/7 at 230/478: 7294 (btw 230/501 = 7261!)

So as strange as it sounds, with my setup I get peak 3dmarks with the mem at 478. Any higher or lower and the score goes down!! Anyone else ever come across this kind of OC before?? Just wanted to share my results.

Use a different utility to overclock - some of them are simply unreliable.

(When the GF3 first came out, many review sites reported no gains in overclocking - they simply assumed Coolbits and utilities based on it worked, when it fact nothing was being changed.)

I saw the same thing here (used RivaTuner)

I did notice that the 3DMarks decreased for a speed step or two, then the next step would hang it up all together.

My assumption is that as I overclocked past a point, errors began occuring in ram and slowed down the works...

then with even more speed, => too many errors to be ignored and it crashed...

bottom line: I'm convinced there is a "peak" in speed and then a decrease (as you test with higher and higher speeds)

due to error handling prior to complete malfunction
