I ran across this article about the P4 and it's performance or lack of it detailed pretty throughly. It also has a good history of the developement of microprocessors and is worth a look just for that.

P4

"Intel, Dell, Gateway, and other computer manufacturers have intentionally misled consumers about the performance of the Pentium 4 processor and are currently involved in selling useless overpriced hardware to unsuspecting consumers. Do what I did with my two Pentium 4 machines. Send them right back to Gateway and Dell and let them know they're selling crap. A $1000 Athlon system is a far better choice of computer than a $4000 Pentium 4 system. No doubt about it and I challenge anyone from Intel, Dell, or Gateway to prove my statements wrong."

The P4 is very much so "CRAP" at the moment! But Intel do have a very scalable architecture and AMD will never be able to compete with it MHZ for MHZ unless a complete core rework. Rememeber to most people MHZ is all they know how to judge the speed of a computer by! Now we all know that is wrong (I hope so anyway!) but Intel are still going to sell many P4's because of that!

Cheers...

its not a "bad" piece of hardware by any means... but the price/performance ratio that is what is so messed up...

Nice article, took forever to read. I wonder how long before the media actually starts to bash the P4. I laugh at all those people who bought into a P4.

Oh also.
As much as I dislike the P4 and many other things about Intel, I can't help but think that article is a little to biased!

I just read the article myself and he's plenty pissed but he does give kudos to Intel when they were doing things right back in the day -

But being a programmer of sorts he is clearly unhappy and frustrated with intel's design forcing massive amounts of code optimizations to make the processor work instead of the other way around.

He has a point.

It's like Ford selling a car that will only run at its best on a particular type of gasoline that no one makes and so Mobil, Exxon, SHell, everybody now has to build and maintain stations that can provide this new type of gas.(actually i suppose this is what a lot of environmentalists want with ethanol or electric based- cars, so my analogy may not be a bad thing )Anyways, he seems too thorough to be biased - he's just amazed at the complete lack of real innovation. That's frightening that a company would let its marketing dictate things and not engineering. Let's face it , Intel's fumbles mtch this guy's analyses very well. After the Pentium II they kept making blunder after blunder, at the cost of the consumer, and then trying to patch things up 6 mos later with new stuff like the A for the Celerons and the RDRAM mess, PIII 1.13 glitch....these are mistakes that are clearly the result of a beast with two heads - marketing,pr, sales and engineering, design. and of these heads is up the ass.....

Magnificent Fist

Yeah, I was really surprised when the TechTV Screensaver guys recommended people to get a 1.2g athlon over the P4. They are usually very biased towards Intel.
