Coming out of Wendy's in a section of town I usually don't hang around.

Wife and I are pulling out of our spot and a guy comes runs waving his hands.

guy: you speak english I assume (he is a white male) [this is a predomantly spanish place]

me: yeah, what's wrong? You ok? [he was pretty sweaty and dirty, but his hair and beard were clean, and his clothing in good shape just dirty as well, it was a rainy night.

guy: [goes into a huge story how he is heading back to Jupiter from a job in Miami when his 36" Super Swamper tire blew ($450 tire he said) and caused his trailer to pop off the hitch??? and was now dug into I-95, he needed $17.85 to go with the $75 he had to pay for a used tire coming to him from a place way north that I know the owner of. He offered the cell phone number of his partner trying to find a tow truck for him.]

me: ahh [tire place], I know Keith the owner...he's a good guy...where is the truck exactly.

guy: you can't really see it, I can ride with you there. DOT is there waiting for me to come back within 30min or they are going to fine me $750 and impound my truck and the $30k in tools I have on the back. (he said he did concrete work, having $30,000 in tools for that on a truck seemed odd....towing for a concrete company with 36" swamper tires seems odd as well).

me: well I can't give you a ride, but I will come back if I can see your truck from the road.

guy: ahh come on, I am serious, my truck gets impounded I know my tools will be gone in the night. I can give you the keys to my truck and even my wallet if you let me ride with you there.

me: no way, my wife is with me and I am not doing that...I will be right back if I see the truck.

guy: please hurry, you can't really see it from the road as it's under the bridge, but you will see the flashing lights...I can show you...

I take off....get on the highway and double back....flashing lights under the bridge (which was about 3 miles away from where he was at), but no trucks or trailers.

I called the sheriff.

The odd thing is looking back he wanted to get in the car and was offering his keys and even his wallet. Assuming I would at least look at the ID then...it's odd.

I called the tire shop (they are 24 hour roadside too) and there was no calls to the bridge we were told the truck was.

If you had... WTF there are tires ads at the bottom of the screen! Anyway, as I was saying, if you were carrying a gun, you wouldn't be such a pussy. Just 'cause you recommended the tire places doesn't mean he has to go there. There's just no trust in this world anymore. Everybody's out to scam you, rob you, murder you. Boohoo.

I am gonna take it that Jupiter is a town near you and he was not claiming to be ET, right?

When ever I get into a situation like that, I just offer to make a phone call for them. To a friend or family member who will help.

figures some of the dumbasses would make their appearance.

Go back and read, I said "interesting scam" not that I got scammed.

I find it highly suspicious that should I have given him a ride, nothing would have happened. Being I had a passenger in the car and it was already started, he knew if I gave him a ride he'd probably be in the back seat.

I called it in even though it only cost me a bit of time because someone else may have been tricked.

If you don't trust anybody, why did you even bother stopping in the 1st place? He could've stabbed you in the neck through the window if he wanted to.

You know, he does live in Florida, he could have just shot him.

Him being in the backseat gives him a positional advantage on you if he was armed.

How do you know it was a scam? It could have been a car jacking or something else. Where is the interesting part?

Please, please, please, don't try logic here. It will never pass muster. We only deal in knee jerk reactions and pompous flaming.

Good thinking to leave like that. I fell for a similar scam once, was robbed of $30, beaten a little, and I ran as soon as I could get away. He wanted to "give" something of his to you so you would feel compelled to stay long enough to return the item to him and so you would trust him enough to pull out your wallet when he eventually told you he does not have exact change for your larger bills. He would then direct you to where his friend is located because his friend would have the smaller bills to make change for you.

I was alone and it was my first year assigned to my ship while in the Navy. I was new and trusting some guy who came up to me telling me he was assigned to a ship further down the pier and needed help.

A similar situation happened to me last week, I took my uncle to Walgreens because he had to return something, it is pretty dark around this area so anything can happen. Anyways i have the windows down just waiting in the car and this guy comes up to the window and says he is from Lousiana and his truck broke down and if I could give him a ride to Mcdonalds or something, I just politely told him no, he looked kind of dodgy, like a homeless guy. I was pretty scared at the time cause he could have pulled a knife and just stabbed me in the neck through the window, luckily nothing serious happened.

for the retarded:

"interesting scam": Someone promoting something to take advantage of other's with.

"scammed": being the victim in the above.
