Coming out of Wendy's in a section of town I usually don't hang around.
Wife and I are pulling out of our spot and a guy comes runs waving his hands.
guy: you speak english I assume (he is a white male) [this is a predomantly spanish place]
me: yeah, what's wrong? You ok? [he was pretty sweaty and dirty, but his hair and beard were clean, and his clothing in good shape just dirty as well, it was a rainy night.
guy: [goes into a huge story how he is heading back to Jupiter from a job in Miami when his 36" Super Swamper tire blew ($450 tire he said) and caused his trailer to pop off the hitch??? and was now dug into I-95, he needed $17.85 to go with the $75 he had to pay for a used tire coming to him from a place way north that I know the owner of. He offered the cell phone number of his partner trying to find a tow truck for him.]
me: ahh [tire place], I know Keith the owner...he's a good guy...where is the truck exactly.
guy: you can't really see it, I can ride with you there. DOT is there waiting for me to come back within 30min or they are going to fine me $750 and impound my truck and the $30k in tools I have on the back. (he said he did concrete work, having $30,000 in tools for that on a truck seemed odd....towing for a concrete company with 36" swamper tires seems odd as well).
me: well I can't give you a ride, but I will come back if I can see your truck from the road.
guy: ahh come on, I am serious, my truck gets impounded I know my tools will be gone in the night. I can give you the keys to my truck and even my wallet if you let me ride with you there.
me: no way, my wife is with me and I am not doing that...I will be right back if I see the truck.
guy: please hurry, you can't really see it from the road as it's under the bridge, but you will see the flashing lights...I can show you...
I take off....get on the highway and double back....flashing lights under the bridge (which was about 3 miles away from where he was at), but no trucks or trailers.
I called the sheriff.
The odd thing is looking back he wanted to get in the car and was offering his keys and even his wallet. Assuming I would at least look at the ID then...it's odd.
I called the tire shop (they are 24 hour roadside too) and there was no calls to the bridge we were told the truck was.
