This is the same processor used in the Sega Dreamcast (Runs on the CE kernel). And there is a port of Linux for the Dreamcast so, it's not infeasible to run linux on this pad.

<< Anyone know about using an 802.11b PCMCIA in these? Hell, even a regular ethernet could be useful. And 1 USB = full size keyboard! >>

Yep....long as there's drivers for the OS it's running....standard PCMCIA slot.
>>

I managed to have my $50 Microcenter D-Link DWL500 (DWL650 PCMCIA card) to work with this ePlate, using the COMPAQ WL100 driver for Windows CE 2.11.

A very cool wireless internet tablet for under $300.

I know that there's Linux available for the Hitachi tablet.. While I was trying to search for software I came along a lot of sites that mentioned the SH4 Linux project or something like that

How did you install the drivers? I bought a Compaq wireless pc card that supposedly works for Windows CE, but when I run the setup on my main computer with the Hitachi attached to it by the serial cable, it says that the device isn't supported and only shows Jot as an upgrade option or something

what about wireless 802.11b usb with this hitachi. I understand that no one has gotten that to work on the epod.

Overall, anyone with both, can you comment which is better?

I basically want to surf the internet wirelessly, preferably with usb, without using virtual server, or metaframe. Is the hitachi capable of surfing wireless quickly without metaframe?

The confusion might be due to the problems that Panasonic Toughbook owners had with 802.11b cards requiring a CARDBUS interface (32bit instead of the 16bit of the original PCMCIA interface). Cards using the Lucent chipset work in 16bit but NOT the cards based on the PRISM chipset.

I picked up the ePlate when I saw the sale posted here.

It is a tiny thing! It's smaller & lighter than my girlfriend's Vadem Clio, but I miss the keyboard and the swiveling screen that the Clio has. Anyway, I got it for wireless web browsing, not writing novels.

Sadly, I haven't had any luck getting it to recognize my Linksys WPC11 802.11b card.

I'm using the Compaq WL100 drivers for WinCE 2.11, and I can setup all the parameters in the control panel applet. But, when I check the Link panel, I get an error message that the card cannot be recognized.

The red power LED is on, and the green LED is blinking occasionally. It eventually times out with an error that DHCP settings could not be retrieved. (And the card works in my laptop, and the Vadem Clio.)

Anyone have better luck than me?

Thanks,
Erik

l do most of my web browsing wirelessly, from the bed or the couch. I had been using the ePods for this purpose for a while. Of course I had to order an eSlte for comparison.

Well, having used the Hitachi eSlate for a few days, here are my observations:

The eSlate is definitely sturdier. It's about 1/8" thicker than the ePod and its shape and size make it less fragile.

ePod has a larger screen, and the touchscreen on the ePod seems more accurate and more sensitive. Occasionally I'll get a not-so-precise screen tap on the eSlate, even right after calibration.

Battery life is about the same, about 3.5 hours it seems (informal test)

eSlate has a slightly snappier processor which helps with MP3s and Calligrapher.

eSlate gives me slightly better range with 802.11b card (I guess it puts out more voltage to the card)

More memory and WinCE 3.0 on the eSlate are a plus. On the other hand, I like the ePods' hardware on-screen keyboard and hardware buttons. The eSlate's buttons work well, but not in the dark.

Still not sure which one I'll keep... Need more testing.

For you eSlate owners, here are the must-have apps:

TapRight
CalliGrapher
Terminal Sevices Client

Perplexer:
What brand of 802.11b card are you using?

Thanks for the link to TapRight. I found a link to hitachiservice.com last night. There are a couple of useful downloads there, including a somewhat larger & faster onscreen keyboard.

Using an old Linksys WPC11 card. Interesting stuff at the hitachiservice web site, especially the portrait mode drivers.

But you can't beat Calligrapher's onscreen keyboard. And you can invoke it with a simple down-up penstroke.

It always freaks people out when they write in cursive on my epodS, and Calligrapher recognizes it perfectly (even when l can barely make it out!)

Elfworks:

Just realized that I am using same 802.11b card as you, with same Compaq drivers. PM me if you aren't able to get it going.

Linksys recently released "version 2.5" of the WPC11, based in the Intersil chipset (The 1.0 version I have uses the Prism chipset) Or maybe I have it backwards. Anyway, I installed the driver, inserted the card, had to point it to the Compaq WL100NDS.dll driver, and I was set. DHCP isn't a problem on the eSlate, although it was on the ePods if I recall.

You guys using wireless cards:

Under Control Panel > System > Device, does it say anything in Expansion Slot 1 or 2?

Thanks! I pulled the batteries, and did a fresh install.

The wl100nds.dll drivers worked the first time! (I probably messed things up by installing the 3.0 drivers the first time. They must not have uninstalled cleanly.)

I'm even posting this from ePlate!

Gotta get Calligrapher, though!! (My hand is cramping!!)

Wow, with Terminal Service Client, I am browsing the web wirelessly, and it is like using Windows XP or Windows 2000 on this small tablet.

Where can I get a copy of Calligrapher, hopefully free?

Yes, it is pretty fast with my settings (DSL-->Router-->AP-->ePlate). But then the problem is you are limited to basic browsing, not anything fancy like flash.

BTW, when I use the ePlate alone to surf, maybe it is limited by the browser, most photos are ugly looking 256 colors. If I use terminal service client, it's 16-bit color, looks way better, plus you can do almost verything with IE6.

Where did you find a 16bit TS client for WinCE ?! The only WinCE TS Client I'm aware of is the old 8bit client that we've been using on the ePod for a while. Getting 16bit color on my ePod has required using Citrix Metaframe.

Although Microsoft call it WinCE HPC Pro 3.0, this ePlate really has a WinCE 2.11 core too. Linked here.

I found some interesting stuff for this ePlate from here, including fax application, portraiter display driver, printer drivers, and a lot more. Check it out.
