Might want to try PQView. There's a shareware version for PocketPC devices, but I believe the HandheldPC version costs around 30 bucks. The slideshow feature doesn't work with the ePods because it is not identified as a supported device (after all it IS a hacked OS), but it may with the ePlate.

I've been using my ePods for over a year now and for the original $200 I purchased it for, it is definitely a great device. As a wireless terminal server platform, I don't think it can be beat. Of course it is missing the missing core CE applications (Excel, Word, Outlook) and the Activesync partnership capability, so it's not the best business tool. Given that my original intent for the ePods was as a lightweight "laptop" replacement while on the road, I did some research and decided to get the ePlate from Compgeeks. Looking forward to playing with it, although there is something about using a "hacked" device that seems so much cooler.

I LOVE my ePod..

I use it a little less than when I first got it, but it still rocks... I think it was well worth the $200 investment.. I'd buy the eSlate too, if I could, but the bank account is hurting a bit, so I'll have to pass this time.

I'm using Dockware on the ePod for slideshows, but it has a calender overlayed on top of the pictures, so it ruins the picture shows.

I get lots of oooohs and aaaahs when people see my ePod, and people think it's really cool when I tell them what I do with it.

Damn you, Hot Deals!

Just ordered one, even though I am unemployed, and already own an Epods (posting this message wirelessly from it now)

Don't forget the 10% off code (there are two out there)

40 still available here. Same unit, with 16MB onboard, comes with a 32M upgrade module.

Sure, I'd like 800x600 on this, but realistically, on this size screen, things would be kinda small.

And I prefer that it's running Windows CE. Instant on/off. No need to boot up or shut down every time I want to use it. No hard drive = no noise and better battery life.

I am interested in the terminal server part and web surfing wirelessly on this.... With the terminal server wonder if you can run a dvd using software dvd decoder or run games remotely (not 3d 2d like mario and etc)
Dont have too much experience with terminal stuff lol. Also I assume that you would need Terminal server installed to terminal in?

I agree...instant on and off is nice with WinCE...however, you can almost get that with WinXP now, and I'm sure the upcoming TabletPC's will be sweet (and a hell of a lot more expensive than the ePod or eSlate)...

Not that great of an idea....so a few things on this...
1. Terminal Services is available on Win2K Server and WinXP (aka Remote Desktop Connection). With Win2K Server you can connect through Term Serv and continue to use the desktop as well...With WinXP, a remote connection locks the desktop until the remote connection is completed. WinXP Remote Connection supports sound, but Win2K's doesn't. There is a third party program that does something similar, but I forget the name at the moment...i know that it didn't always work on the ePod though. Term Serv is a solid performer...i love it.

Now, the (simply explained, but not entirely technically correct) way term serv works is it takes screen shots of the server in use and sends them back to the client. So, you're essentially acting on screen shots taken at a rapid pace. The movements that you do are then remapped on the server to perform the actual functions that you're trying to do. If you try to watch FMV (full motion video) whether it's an AVI, a DVD, or video from your TV Capture card (this is what I tried), you'll end up getting a fairly fast slide show.

So, can you play games on it? I wouldn't recommend video intensive games (like FPS games, etc..) but simpler games (like MAME games or NES/Genesis emulated games) would probably work fairly well, although I haven't tried them myself.

Just a note: Microsoft gives away a WinCE programming toolkit called eMbedded Visual Tools that should let you compile programs for this (as long as a device has WinCE 2.1 or higher it should work).

There's a fair amount of open source software out there for WinCE(ie GNUBoy, a Gameboy Emulator) shouldn't be too much trouble to port most things onto a tablet.

this deal is becoming luke warm. the jerks at compgeeks have decided to make the other model which is in stock 279 up from the 249 that was the price yesterday. i think i've decided to play the waiting game for the next round of much more powerful tablet pcs. however, i really wanted a tablet for powerpoint presents, rs232 and a wireless terminal client for home use. i think someone is saying wait when compgeeks pulls such a quick price change.

for those interested check out the Fujitsu Stylistic. Theyre cheap, run 98 or linux, and 800x600 i think. HERE is a thread on them.

Where is the best place to buy the Fujitsu Stylistic (reputable merchant and cheap)? How much should we expect to spend total?

Stylistics are over $3K MSRP! Don't know if there are any closeouts on them though.

for those with epods, or similar WinCe based tablets, how is surfing on the net with WinCe based Internet Explorer? Are you limited by the browser? Will all the graphics load or is it text based? Will some pages not be able to load?

superflysocal, if you use the buildin IE in epod to browse web, it is going to be slow, very slow. Yes, it displays all the graphics. However, if you try the terminal service , and use epod as a terminal for a desktop computer, you'll almost experience the same speed as the desktop pc. In terminal mode, desktop pc renders the html page and what epod does is to simply to display the result. so that is much faster.

any more thoughts on 1. is the stylistic line really a good option and 2. where is the best place to get them in good condition. 3. which stylistic should you focus attention on.

any suggestions would be appreciated. seems fujitsu for web surfing via thin client might be a better option?

thx

may, thanks for the reply.

With terminal server, do you have to have it hooked up to the PC or can you go through wireless link. My goal is to find a tablet that will let me browse the Internet using wireless 802.11b with fast results and full graphics.

<< How heavy are the Fujitsu Stylistics? I just got my Hitachi in and it's pretty light. >>

Got mine too. Compare to this, Stylistics 1200 is about 2 or 3 times heavier.

The ultimate setup is running Citrix Metaframe XP on your PC and then hooking up with your ePod. That gives you TRUE 16bit color. WinXP Remote Desktop is capable of that too, but not for a WinCE client.
After all, M$ bought the Citrix technology to come up with Terminal Services in the first place !

PS - I've got a Fujitsu Stylistic 1200 too and it's really not comparable to the ePods/Hitachi. The Fujitsu is like a laptop really with no keyboard. It's heavy but can run any OS and can carry a ton of mp3's around on a 20gig HD. ePods is a nice lightweight tablet that's pretty useless when not hooked up to a dektop throught term serv. or metaframe.
