interference with TV from a speaker

I have an old (1989) color television that is displaying splotches of purple/green whenever I move my bookshelf size speaker near it. I assume this is related to the magnetic field of the speaker, but I'm in a bit of a bind, as I need to place my center channel speaker somewhere in the immediate vicinity of the TV.

Is there any way to improve the shielding on either the speaker or the TV? Is this a common problem? If it's not magnetic interference, what's going on? Should I be concerned that this TV is going to make me sterile?

Your problem description does indicate it is due to the speakers magnetic field. The fix should be simple. Purchase some iron sheet metal from a hardware store, the thicker the better. Determine where to place it by experimentation. There are better materials to use, such as Mu metal, but should not be necessary in your case. Non-magnetic materials, such as aluminum, will not work as a magnetic shield. A magnetic shield does not need to be grounded to function, but if safety is a concern, you can ground it.
