Intermittent freezing requiring shutdown on 2500k

Hello, I built a machine for a family member about a year ago, and it's been freezing every week or so requiring a reset. It seems that the windows on screen will "multiply and leave tracers" and then the machine freezes. It happens completely randomly, often when the machine is just idling overnight.

Core i5 2500k with Coolermaster Hyper 212+
Asus P8z77-lx
2x2 gb Corsair Vengeance ddr3-1600
Corsair 550m TX
Crucial M4 128 gb SSD
2 TB Western Digital Green

Nothing is oc'ed, and I updated the mobo bios to the newest version. I updated all drivers available from asus website. I also clocked the ram down to 1333 with very loose timings at 1.5v. The cpu voltage is on auto.

Now the weird thing is, I can run Prime95, Aida64, MEMTEST 86+, SSD benchmarks, and no errors or crashes ever occur and cpu temperatures don't break 62c. The machine appears to run flawlessly..... until the crash occurs when just sitting at the desktop or looking at the internet. I tried looking at event viewer but am having troubles really interpreting the info. I did notice a lot of SATA errors in the log, and the only time I actually witnessed the crash I had a HDD info program open, and it showed the smart data flashing to "failed" for a quick second as the computer crashed.

I'm really hoping to get some ideas from you folks, I'm going to get the computer from them at some point and need things to try\diagnostics to run. Thanks in advance for any help.

Is there any special mouse driver installed, or is it just the plain Windows driver?

Mice are cheap. Maybe try a new one. Maybe you could also try a different driver or reload the standard windows driver. Drivers go bad sometimes also. If it is USB try a different port. Some cases sometimes have bad ports on the case.

I thought about it and realized that the computer was doing this with a different mouse as well, so it is not the mouse or mouse software. Unfortunately I couldn't take the computer home with me like I planned, so I won't be able to continue to troubleshoot this for the moment. I'll resurrect this thread in a month or so. Thanks for the replies, I will try switching usb ports next time I get to it.

Disable all power saving options.
Run malware scan.
Remove current internet browser and switch to a different one.

I had ran Malwarebytes scanner, caught a few minor things. The power saving options are for the most part disabled. Now I no longer think this is a software\windows issue because it froze on me requiring a reset while in the bios itself, not even doing anything. It had froze once with first bios for the board when I had built it but didn't think much of it. And it currently has been updated using ezflash to the newest bios and has froze once more.

The OP is kypron77, chelhxi made the statement about the mouse. So are you two related or is there two separate issued being combined in this thread?

Anyway, try updating the firmware in the M4. The older revision does have a known bug. Also, if there is anyway to disconnect the 2TB HDD then doing that may help with troubleshooting.

Yes I posted with my wife's profile by accident, it was me though. Good idea for the M4, I will update it next time I go over there, and maybe disconnect the WD drive and put another in it for now.

Are the powersaving modes disabled in the bios?

As stated above start disconnecting stuff one at a time to see if prob goes away. run memtest or go to one stick of memory.
