do not get the cheapest one at lowe's. spend about $180-200 on a window unit. the really cheap ones are really electrically inefficient, so you will end up paying a lot more in the long run.

This is retarded how?

Anyhow . . .
I know a lot of apartments have restrictions, but I would think not being able to have an AC unit would be against some sort of city/state law. With the heat waves that come and go, not being allowed to keep yourself reasonably cool if not illegal is sure as heck unethical.

I'd suggest a swamp cooler. Air conditioners have a tendency to have random objects pop out of them. Like mice, three-toed sloths, and Alex Trebek.

I got 8000 btu one, and it's not all that great for my big living room. It's probably OK for a small room. Also, put it as close to the window as you can, because that output hose acts as a heater if you stretch it out.

I missed all the responses since my last post. Just got back from Lowe's with two of the cheapest ones (just saw the warning now). Anyhow, I'm only in this apt. until 4/30/2007, and won't be using these the whole time, so I'm hoping for the best with them.

Not necessarily - I was looking at $99-139 ones last year and they all had their efficiency ratings published in huge numbers all over the place, and they were all pretty similar. The $129 one (6500 btu) I bought was not only just as efficient as anything else, it came with a 5 year in house warranty. Clearly they don't think it'll ever break.

You got window units, correct?

Anyone actually have any recommendations for freestanding air conditioners that are < $500 and can cool anywhere from 100-250 sq ft reliably, rather than just saying "go look"?

This is only the second consecutive day of >90F heat in Central Ohio, and there's no way I'm gonna be able to handle this all summer.

/me feels ill very easily when hot

Are your windows up/down vertical or side to side/horizontal (casement)?
