Looking to add an internal card reader to my tower. Have available 5.25" bay.

What is currently the best thing i can get? Just upgraded my camera to Nikon D5 so must include CFexpress and preferably as many of older formats as possible such as SD and CF at a minimum.

Thanks ahead

Tons of them on Amazon. The speed of the reader makes a difference in price though. Having the appropriate headers makes a difference as well.

Yeah i saw them, but they lack CFExpress and are cheaper than external Lexar reader i have for CFExpress. Just want something universal and of good quality.

Then search for CFEx as your primary goal and then filter down to what you want.
I am not an idiot... That is what i've done before posting this thread but did not find anything that looks good. I don't mind dropping couple hundred bucks on a quality part, but i just don't see anything of this type.

They're all generic and as you move down the list you get more features like USBC ports included.

Spending "UP" on these sorts of things is dumb since it's all the same crap from CN anyway. If you're willing to pay a premium they'll gladly take you money. Now, if you want "bleeding edge" or niche devices then

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2251832734619888.html - has an LCD screen / fan controls

I see a few at quick glance that match the Amazon options from appearance but, I'm not digging into them comparing specs. They should for the most part hit the mark for multiple sizes and if not there's the adapter options to insert the cards into something bigger that does work with the bay option.

Hmm... Everything more specific to only CFX only comes up with external USB 3.2 devices and only single application readers. I guess since it's a niche application and mostly portable / photog type use still there isn't anyone making a bay type reader for some reason.

When I think of higher speed cards though I'm thinking UHS-I/II cards but those are only 300MB/s whereas this newer format is basically a NVME in the shape of a CF card. Maybe this is where the confusion comes into this thread on my part. I figured you were talking about one thing and it's something completely different.

Figuring I like to hack hardware and make it do what I want and put it places it hasn't been before I was more focused on the housing and then deal with the connectivity later to make it work. If the pin out on the CFX is different than CF then it presents an issue of having to hack apart an external reader and put it into the bay slot yourself. The bandwidth apparently shouldn't be an issue using a standard USB 3.2 header off the MOBO though from what I've see for the readers but, looking at the speed specs of CFX that doesn't make sense. You would need a 10gbps connection off the MOBO to hit max speed of the CFX.

For instance my board has a USB C header that does 20gbps which would handle the speed of a CFX w/o sweating a bit. The problem is getting the interface / socket portion mounted into the bay and connected to the MOBO. Taking a cheap housing and mounting it inside of it should be the easy part but, cutting the cable and splicing it to a header might be a bit of a pain to deal with if the wires aren't coded the same. There might be a header / USB-A or C adapter though that could piece them together.

That is basically what i was trying to avoid doing and was hoping someone knows a more elegant solution. Using mobo header to USB-A socket and CFE reader usb cable to it is easier than hacking up the cables. But i was hoping to find a 5.25" bay product that would have that plus other card formats in a professionally made package.

Best thing you can get is a different camera since that doesn't exist.

Next best is search relentlessly for years until a low quality chinese generic is produced. Next best is DIY, take an existing external, cobble together a bracket to mount in a 5.25" bay with a sled or just cut out a hole in a blank plate for the 5.25" bay. Other card formats, shoehorn into same bay what you can, or mount a bay reader for those in another bay.

I like to avoid all this, my computer is out of the way under my desk, don't want to be interfacing with it besides pressing the power button once in a blue moon, then on the desk is a USB3 hub, and I attached a shelf behind, and power strip and ++ to support anything else worthy of being on my desk, like an external CFexpress card reader if I happened to have a camera that used CFe.

Just sayin', you make due with what is available. If you can't find it and you're "not an idiot"... time to think outside the box.

This IS for my NEW camera. Just got a good deal on ebay for a lightly used nikon D5.
I'll probably end up cobbling up something in 5.25 drive. Until then external reader is my best option looks like.
Picked this up on Amazon: StarTech.com USB 3.0 Internal Multi-Card Reader with UHS-II Support - SecureDigital/Micro SD/Memory Stick/Compact Flash Memory Card Reader (35FCREADBU3)
Once i can think of other things to shove into another 5.25 inch drive bay, i guess I'll hot glue the Lexar external reader and other stuff there.
