Internal modem - advice please!

A family friend wants to buy a 56k modem to get on the net.

Not really interested in what does best for gaming. Just an internal modem which is all round fast and reliable.
Any ideas?

The best cheap software-modems are the ones made by Lucent.

US Robotics is THE best... a little more expensive, but you wanna good one for online gaming...

ive had good luck with generic modems that have the rockewell(now called conexant) chip.

cost about $20

I was surprised to find that even the cheapest ones work fine, so you may want to look for one that's free after rebate. But considering that an external, all-hardware US Robotics modem that plugs into an RS-232 serial port is sometimes just $80, it may be the least troublesome option of them all. Some of the V.90 models (i.e., 5686-03 but not 5686) are even cheaper but can be upgraded at no cost to V.92, and it seems that USR's V.90 BIOSes are more likely to give V.90 connections than their V.92 BIOSes are.

You can find a generic LT chipset PCI modem at www.axiontech.com for 15 bucks plus shipping, they work great. Or you can pay $25-30 for a Diamond SupraMax (based on Rockwell chipset) that works almost as well.

I don't know if you are stuck on internal or not, but my experience has always been better with external modems. It just always seems easier with troubleshooting problems when they come up
