Internal network within a network

So i rent a room in an apt, so I don't have access to the router, and only have 1 conncetion to the router, but of course i have more than 1 computer, here's my current setup:

From Wall (Router) > Computer
From Computer, with Crossover cable > Linksys WRT54g Router
Router > Multiple Computers

Anyone have any guides or tips for setting this up?

Do you know what router they are currently using? I would just plug your current router into the current connection from the other router and then connect all your computers to your router.

it's another linksys router, but i don't have the name/pw for it.

i tried what you suggested, and i'm able to get all the systems on it see each other, but can't get internet connection on any of them. any ideas>?

The computer that connects to the wall and then to your Router needs software Routing through like Windows ICS, and you Router IP has to be so than it can work with ICS. (192.168.0.1 subnet).

It make more sense to connect your Router directly to the wall and all your computers to your Router.

You can add as many routers as you want. As long as all of your own PCs are connected to the same router, they'll all talk to each other, should be able to access the Internet, and should be fairly well protected from other networks in the building.

If the upstream router doesn't offer DHCP, then you'll have to manually set the IP address/subnet mask/Default Gateway/DNS settings in your new router.

yeah, i have no problem going straight from the wall to My Linksys router , that's what i did and was able to see computers on the network but not the internet. should DHCP be enabled on MY router? It is ON the central router, with IP 192.168.0.1

yeah, enable dhcp on your router, and make sure it giving you a different ip range, like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.3.1 somethen like that.

appreciate all the help but still no dice.

do they need different subnet masks? they're both setup for 255.255.255.0

also, advanced routing, i have it setup to "Router" instead of "Gateway"

so here's the summary of how it is now

Central Router (192.168.0.1) > MY Router (192.168.1.1) > Computers

network works, all systems can see each other, just no internet

oh, and 1 more thing, i can't ping the Central Router from any of the systems connected to MY Router. ideas?

why not just add a switch? You want the networks to be seperate? Setup firewalls and use access rules if thats what you want

no, not at all. it's just what i already have & really don't want to spend more money.

You really don't want to be on somebody else's network. Not if you don't trust them.

There's no reason why you can't add another router. Between your PC and www.microsoft.com, your packets travel through MANY routers.

You need to connect to the web management screen of your router and describe to us what the "WAN Status" screen says. That's what you are hooking up to your building's network. All of YOUR PCs will be on the LAN side of the router.

Be aware that a crossover cable may not be what you need for this hookup. Try both types of cables. Most routers and switches don't care...but some do.

it has absolutely nothing to do with being on the central router's network. it's just i only have access to 1 port, but i have 2 computers & an XBox 360, so i just need MORE and since i already had the router, it seems like the way to go since i've seen other people getting it working, i just know i'm missing something....:-(

disable the DHCP on the router and run it as a switch. this will be the easiest way to get up and running quickly

You are much better off with a segregated Network. It is netter for you and better for the landlord.

There is No reason that the two Router's would not work unless you are missconfiguring there reason that it should not work.

The cable between a regular port (which is probably what comes from the wall, and the WAN port of your Router should be a regular
cable Not a crossover.

uhh..

set it up so that it's.. wall (patch cable) > Router Wan Port > (patch cable) > all other computers..

set your router with the settings that your first computer had in the "WAN" portion of the routers setup...

You can leave dhcp on or off on the router, but setup your computers and xbox to use dhcp and plug them into your router... done and done.


P.S. You will not see the PC's on the OTHER side of your router (wan port). Only your own..
