Internal or external HD for backup storage?

I was thinking about getting an external HD for backing up the stuff I don't want to lose, but they're so darned expensive.

Now I'm thinking that's dumb to get an external HD if I'm not going to take it anyway. So I think I should just get another internal HD, but I want to be able to turn it off when I'm done backing up my files to it to save it's POH and so it doesn't create anymore excess noise.

Is that possible? It would be a SATA drive.

Perfect solution... plus, if you really care about your data, you want something that is "separate" from your rig, just in case a surge or your power supply decides to fry multiple components, including your connected hard drives.

Hmmm, what ya'll think of this external HD?

I'm thinking about getting the WD1600BB (160GB) w/ AMS VENUS external enclosure, but this is about $2 cheaper, and doesn't hold as much. I don't need 160GB, I would like at least 120GB and want it to be reliable.

why would you buy and external hd? you can get a 320 gig hd for like 100 bucks, then the external enclosure another 30

so a 320 gig external hd for 140 bucks?

Because $140 is too much and I don't want/need a 320 gig HD.

If the design of an external enclosure requires a fan then points off for noise but there are those that do not require one. If it is limited to USB then more points off for speed. Copying several hundred GB via ATA is already slow enough in my opine. So if your SATA system is capable of hot plugging then either get an external SATA enclosure and proper eSATA connection (usually included), or a removeable rack. If the system must be rebooted then then save some scratch and go with the rack (more compact anyway). Or in either case opt for no enclosure at all but just the bare SATA and power cable (there are combo external connectors even). The drive could be stored in its original clam shell or whathaveyou in a seperate safe location.

OH, one more thing, you can just get like a laptop HD and external enclosure and no fan or power cord is necessary, only a usb w00ts

I think I figured it out, I'll get another WD2500KS for $89 and use it as my backup drive, than once I drop some of my data, I'll get an external enclosure and stick my old 80 gig HD in it and use that as my backup and run the 2 WD2500KS's in RAID.

Sound good? I don't think I have to worry about a surge overload frying my stuff, seeing as the OCZ Modstream has overload protection and all my stuff is connected to a surge protector.
