Where do you think we disagree?
I dont. The post was not an argument against what you posted, I just replied illustrating the point of how ridiculous it is for the hired hand to be able to tell the business owner what he can and cant do in running his business. Because it is. They are free to make suggestions, sure - but the business owner is also free to choose to not act on them.

Grossly immoral, unsafe, illegal practices? Sure, but implementation of new machinery or techniques to improve efficiency? Negative.

The most obvious way forward is to maintain a base of labor and some % of any increase in port handling can be handled by automation and some % handled by labor.

The devil is in the details of what % of what.

Most of the time if you keep the folks that are already there happy, maybe keep room for their kids, you can automate out the additional workload.

Question will the union rank and file vote to strike? It may be smart for other unions to remind their rank and file how much Biden has supported unions and Trump has not.

Its a very similar situation when you get down to it. Think about how pissed all the abacus makers were when the pocket calculator was released.

I'm generally pro-union but they cannot and really should not protect, especially in this case, a small class of entrenched people from the literal progression of time and technology at the expense of everybody else in society. I am perhaps biased in this assessment I guess since it happened in my industry a few decades ago and the union that eventually became obsolete perpetrated a string of fires, bombings, and death threats against my family. It was not a fun time.

I guess they've missed the "extra benefits" they used to have before they developed LOCKED CONEX boxes.

I have very little sympathy for this particular union.

Won't someone think of the whalers and stop all this drilling for oil?

Fuck those union assholes. I don't understand why Biden hasn't used the labor laws to keep them working. Well I know why; The election and not wanting to piss off the union. He should do what is right for the country.

Guy running the ILA explicitly said they would engage in a huge slowdown if T-H were used to force them back on the job.

Reagan did the right thing with firing the Air Traffic Controllers, their strike was illegal. I had a good friend that was an Air Traffic Controller in Miami making an ass load of money. He stated Reagan didn't have the balls to fire them. A week later he found out that Reagan wasn't fucking around. He lost his job, boat, his house and his land in the Keys. It's been years ago and last I heard he was selling life insurance in the Orlando area.

Slow is better than nothing...

Probably not or at least not by much in terms of paying people to do almost nothing and ending up with a ton of frustrated people on the other end trying get their stuff when the port is technically "open".

70% pay raises and no automation seems to be an extreme position.

If I was the union I'd likely be most afraid that the shippers cave then spend the next few years working to divert as much of this trade as economically feasible through Mexico and Canada. Obviously not all of it can go that way but a large percentage probably can and that's going to cost the longshoremen jobs. Container shipments to MX are already growing by double digits due to near shoring and massive investments in the ports there are likely along with RR infra into the southern US.

Pay for longshoremen is based on their years of experience. Under the ILA's former contract with USMX, which expired on Monday, starting pay for dockworkers was $20 per hour. That rose to $24.75 per hour after two years on the job and to $31.90 after three years, topping out at $39 for workers with at least six years of service.

so what? These people live and work in metropolitan areas, where the COL is high. Why do you want hardworking folks to not make enough money to live decent lives and support a family?

oh wait. because you are a Trump party member.

I'm failing to see a problem here. Seems like union negotiation got them a pretty good deal.

$39/hr btw is about median household income in the US. So we're not talking extravagant wages.

Where did I say they shouldn't have a living wage?

My post was a correction to another poster that said the Average Wage was 20 dollars an hour. That is actually the starting wage...

They haven't talked since June as I heard it. They want no automation like the rest of the world ports... WTF is up with that?

They did offer them a 50% pay raise over 6 years and the Union turned it down.
