I'll say this, the gross amounts some of these guys can earn sound pretty good. But having to work 60+ hours a week to do it is nuts.

Sounds like they do need a raise in their next contract and frankly they also need to push for increased hiring. If they aren't pushing for an increase in the number of longshoremen but just more money they are fools.

People should be able to make a living wage and not have to work long work weeks to do it.

Efficiency improvements via a little extra automation would probably do it.

Like is happening literally everywhere else in the world that is not the United States east coast. West coast union bowed to the inevitable and is focused on pay and getting the jobs that come out of automation for their membership knowing some stuff is just going to disappear.

ILA will go back to work after increased wage offer and resume negotiations thru 1/15/25.

https://www.wsj.com/business/logist...-to-end-dockworkers-strike-a6032db5?st=nUpCda

The breakthrough Thursday came after port employers offered a 62% increase in wages over six years, according to people familiar with the matter.

The agreement ends a strike that had closed container ports from Maine to Texas and threatened to disrupt everything from the supply of bananas in supermarkets to the flow of cars through America’s factories.

The new offer, up from an earlier proposed raise of 50%, came after the White House privately and publicly pressed the large shipping lines and cargo terminal operators who employ the longshore workers to make a new offer to the union.

The International Longshoremen’s Association and port operators, in a joint statement, said they had reached a tentative agreement on wages and union members would return to work. They said the agreement would extend the prior contract, which expired at the start of this week, through Jan. 15, 2025 while the two sides negotiate on other issues, including automation on the docks.

Breaking story has pithy presentation ATM at New York Times:

Oct. 3, 2024, 6:51 p.m. ET
The International Longshoremen’s Association, the union that represents dockworkers on the East and Gulf Coasts, agreed on Thursday to suspend a strike that closed down major ports after receiving an improved wage offer from employers.

The strike, which began on Tuesday, threatened to weigh on the economy five weeks before national elections. Employers, represented by the United States Maritime Alliance, have offered to increase wages by 62 percent over the course of a new six-year contract, according to a person familiar with negotiations. That increase is lower than the union had initially asked for, but much higher than the alliance’s earlier offer.

In a statement, the union said it had reached “a tentative agreement on wages” and would go back to work after extending its current contract until Jan. 15. It said it was returning to the “bargaining table to negotiate all other outstanding issues.”

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.

Probably good for the Dems because the magarats would probably try to hang the blame on Biden/Harris administration.
Or actually come out and say its all Kamala Harris' fault because she's the actual one in charge.
Yup. T/V claim every time, whatever the problem (or supposed problem) is, that it's Kamala's fault.

Hopefully that gets picked up.

Money was always going to be the easy part and it makes sense to sweeten that pot now to get them back to work. The demand to never automate anything at the ports is not going to be something the companies give up. I figure the union eventually relents but might take a bit.

Well that was a big nothing burger.

Meanwhile a whole bunch of idiots hoarded paper products like paper towels and toilet paper, even though those are made in the US and don't come through the ports. amazing lol

If they can tie the automation increase in efficiency and profit to a percentage of increase to the workers wages I think it will fly, like they did on the West Coast.

Just share some of the motherfucking profits!!! JFC…

Reagan did the right thing with firing the Air Traffic Controllers, their strike was illegal. I had a good friend that was an Air Traffic Controller in Miami making an ass load of money. He stated Reagan didn't have the balls to fire them. A week later he found out that Reagan wasn't fucking around. He lost his job, boat, his house and his land in the Keys. It's been years ago and last I heard he was selling life insurance in the Orlando area.
So your buddy got his whole fucking life ripped from him and you frame that as a good thing? Honest question, are you a sociopath?
