just like the chinese did nothing previously.......lolol
They all but sent us back to the 38th parallel with our tails between our legs..lol

The Reds are too economically interconnected with The West now. The only thing they have to gain by siding with North Korea is a puppet buffer state. Economically, they have everything to lose. Whether they side with them or not, they will have a flood of impoverished people coming across their border if war breaks out again, sorta like the problem we have with Mexico multiplied by 10000.

The Chinese could have been repelled had our military been given the authorization and tools to do what was necessary to win that war. The only thing that stopped us was the fact that the Soviet Union was still friends with Mao at that time, willing to start WW3.

They still have a shitload of artillery within range of Seoul. The bitch slap of death would probably need to include tactical nukes along the DMZ at least.

... you know that might just work. If we flatten all the artillery in range of Seoul it should be much easier to dull the North's response.

Are they fortified and concealed in such a way that a South Korean preemptive strike could not eliminate the vast majority of them before they have a chance to do significant damage to Seoul?

(Note: I am not advocating a US preemptive strike, the South Koreans need to make that call, not the US)

I wonder if some carpet bombing of the NK artillery would be enough to scatter their troops and prevent them from a massive attack on Seoul?

Tactical nukes would be an awful idea because it would give people like Iran more excuses to develop and even use nukes.

I suspect that there will be some form of retaliation against NK but it won't be publicly disclosed or conducted openly.

That would be the best response.

Sink a few of their ships (secretly of course) and then deny all knowledge of such actions.

This is what the Soviets would have done, sadly we aren't so bold.

Yep. Would be hard if not impossible to do with conventional weapons IIRC.

sanctions?

No, I meant something that gets a message across. Some kind of terrible "accident" in NK. Won't look like a military operation, yet they find a way to get NK to understand that karma finds a way to even the score.

<ring.... ring....>
Diplomat: Hello, my dear NK counterpart.

NK guy: Hello, diplomat from Evil America. Death to your country. I hope you were calling to arrange a foursome for Memorial Day weekend! I've been practicing and I think I'm going to beat you outright this time!

Diplomat: Sorry, maybe later this year, my friend, and don't think you'll beat me next time - I'm down to a 9 handicap! I am calling on behalf of the United States to express our deepest sympathy for the tragedy that occurred and to ask if you would like any humanitarian assistance. We know it can be challenging to cope with the loss of 1,000 lives and a research facility.

NK guy: Loss of lives? What facility? What are you talking about?

Diplomat: Oh, you'll have to excuse me. I made a mistake computing the time difference. Gotta run! See you soon. <click>

Two hours later, NK guy in his office sees his aide rush in out of breath.
"Sir, there has just been a massive explosion at the Big Happiness Research Operations Center! Countless deaths! The facility is in ruins!"

Not saying it would be a good idea, just saying it's about the only thing that would work IMHO.

You would probably need to coordinate a decapitation strike at their leadership while simulataneously taking out their artillery in and around the DMZ. Also, IIRC (I could be wrong), they do have missiles capable of hitting Japan so you'd want to knock those out too.

I don't think any of this is really on anyone's radar at this point, and the current policy of isolating NK will continue. I think the only way we would ever go to war with NK is if they invaded SK -- I don't think the American people would support losing a single American soldier otherwise, and I would agree with that logic.

I am just shocked that the International response is so weak or non-caring....A military ship was sunk and over 40 sailors were killed by the torpedoe of an enemy submarine.

How is that not an act of war??

Of course, if it was a US Navy ship that was hit, Obama would apologize to the other nation for allowing our ship to get in the way of their torpedo. Hell, he would probably reimburse them for the cost of the torpedo as a sign of good will...

Give Obama a little more credit. He's a smooth operator. He'd hand them the check while bowing to them. Two birds, one stone.

They should attack this Cold War style! SK should just randomly sink a NK ship in a couple months. Then deny it. And when proof comes that shows it was undeniably their attack... just deny it like NK always does. Fuck 'em.

Pull an Iraq/Iran/North Korea/Vietnam/China/Russia maneuver.

Nearly half the population of SK is in range of deep, dug-in artillery. I'm not sure what else you could do. Risking the lives of 20 million people for death of 46 takes some big balls.

The only Nork artillery guns or MRLS that can reach central Seoul from behind the North Korean border are the M-1978 Koksan guns, and in order to do this they would need to be moved close to the border where they would be vulnerable. North Korea is suspected to have a few hundred of these and there are only 17 hardened artillery sites within 55Km of central Seoul.

The real threat is ballistic missiles with chemical warheads.

They'll never work.
