Internet Addicts Should Be Considered Mentally Ill
Humphrey Cheung

Chicago (IL) - Internet addiction should be considered a true mental illness, according to a recent editorial published in the prestigious American Journal of Psychiatry. Jerald Block MD says excessive online gaming, porn surfing along with e-mail and text messaging are signs of mental collapse and "merit inclusion" in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V).

Block pointed to ten deaths in South Korean Internet cafes as sure signs of addiction. He adds that the average high school student in South Korea plays online games 23 hours a week and that more than 210,000 children required treatment for excessive gaming and Internet usage in 2006. Chinese figures show that 13.7% of teenagers are addicted to the Internet, according to Block.

Internet addiction is a real mental illness because it exhibits four characteristics said Block. The first is that online addicts lose the sense of time or neglect basic needs like sleeping and eating. Addicts also feel anger or depression when their computers are inaccessible. Block claims that online addicts continually buy better computer equipment or software. Finally, he says online addiction has serious negative repercussions like social isolation and poor achievement. Basically, he's just described most World of Warcraft players I know. Trust me, I know hard it is to quit.

Interestingly enough, Dr. Block owns a patent on a way to restrict computer access. According to the Journal, this was not considered to be a conflict of interest in publishing the editorial.

========================================================

I have most symptoms

I am not losing any weight so my basic need are filled and then some

I do miss my PC when I can't access it

I upgrade my PC whenever I have some disposable income

As far as my job and personal achievement, that's none of your g0dam business.

My internet usage consist mostly of reading news sites, forums and technical web sites like Toms hardware and anantech.

I still have my dog, my wife, a house, 2 cars, a job and some friends so I can't be doing too badly.

But most importantly, I have 2 PCs and a high speed internet connection

How about YOU?

When was in highschool I probably qualified on most of those. Once I hit college I pretty much lost all interest in computers and the internet.

I couldn't contact my home computer from work today so I skipped lunch and rushed home as early as possible, heh.

I can't continually upgrade my computer - not enough money since I've been in college. Before though, yes, what I could reasonably afford.

Yes, I do neglect sleep from being on the Internet. When it's not been available, I find other ways of neglecting sleep and eating.

Socially isolated? Yes, but I was like that back before I had ever heard of the Internet or PCs.

Anger or depression when computers aren't accessible? Not anger, maybe more like a friend is in a coma. When the Internet goes out, then that friend has had a momentary lobotomy.

Addicted to the Internet? Maybe, maybe not. How do you define "addiction?" Is a hunter addicted? Is a sports fan addicted? Someone who eats potato chips regularly: Addicted? Hell, someone who has sex regularly, are they addicted?

Pretty much the same for me right down to the wife, house, cars, job...etc. I haven't upgraded a computer in my house for about 2 years now though. I have too many other hobbies that take up my time/money (like motorcycles and bicycles).

BTW-You misspelled walmart in your poll.

Neglect sleep? Yes.

Neglect food? Hell no. Internet and food go together quite nicely

"So you're gonna be institutionalized
You'll come out brainwashed with bloodshot eyes
You won't have any say
They'll brainwash you until you see their way.

[Chorus:]
I'm not crazy - in an institution
You're the one who's crazy - in an institution
You're driving me crazy - in an institution

They stuck me in an institution
Said it was the only solution
To give me the needed professional help
To protect me from the enemy, myself"

When I moved into my apartment with my girlfriend over a year ago, we didn't have Internet for about 3 weeks. I was happy and didn't miss it much.

I don't think I'm addicted, but I definitely love it. Free information, unfettered access to news and commentary, conversation, humor, multi-player gaming, and consistent improvements through software updates are a huge plus and something I consider invaluable.

I could live without it, but I'd genuinely miss it. It's not an electronic nipple for me, it's an extension of society and another dynamic connection to the rest of civilization, something I think everyone should have access to.

if i am on the internet, i will neglect food and sleep, but i tend to do that anyways.

When i don't have internet access i hardly even notice.

I haven't boughten anything for my computer in ~3 years

not really socially isolated

when i have access to the internet, yes i can be

no not more than i otherwise consider myself to be.

I don't neglect food or sleep, I am constantly on the internet but I can easily stop, I just don't really have a reason to.

Thankfully I don't have an addictive personality. I've drank on the weekends since college and have stopped for a month without any issues. I played Eve Online for 3 years and quit when I was hardly ever playing anymore. Haven't touched it in over a year. The closest sign I can think of is sometimes when I am playing an RTS I wont eat lunch till 2-3pm instead of noon. That is about it. If there is a choice between going out and hanging with friends or playing a game, I would much rather go out.

It is hard for me to relate to people with addictions as I feel it is just self control, I guess I should just be glad I'm not one of them.

Well. I freaked out when the EDGE connection on my PDA stopped working for a few days. Also get really pissed when I'm reading something online and my gfx card driver decides it needs to reset and my screens blank out for 30 seconds.

That being said, I'd rather sleep then trawl the intertubes.

Haha, oh ok? So he isn't going to suggest using his way of restricting computer access to "help" these new people he has clearly labeled as mentally ill?

I've lost sleep over games. I've also lost sleep from playing soccer at 3 in the morning. Doing something enjoyable makes people not want to go to bed, imagine that, now I'm a psychiatrist.

Also, great poll options Number1
