internet applications crashing....please help.

hi all,
i'm running windows 98 and have a 56k modem....my internet access was working perfectly until i tried networking my two computers (to play games). while setting up my ethernet card on my machine it crashed during the setup. i eventually got the ethernet card to work and could play games across the two machines, but then all of my internet applications started crashing. i can still sign on (via dial up networking - so i doubt this is a hardware issue) but whenever a program tries to do something that would require an internet connection it crashes. i have removed the ethernet card and tried reinstalling all my dialup adapter settings and dun settings, and the programs still crash.
any ideas? pretty weird huh?
the details of the crash window say:

IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000:433d4e59.

thats your problem, IE is very buggy. If you dont have much on your computer(all your stuff on cd's) i recomend a reformat. Fixed alot of problems with my computer. And IE is picky about settings, get one wrong and you have to change it to the correct one. I remember the 'ol days when i was on 56k... changed one thing and IE didnt start again, eventually found it was a compadability prob but thats all fixed now and running on DSL..

yeah....i know....microsoft outlook crashes as well, and AIM refused to even try to sign on (even though it doesn't crash).....i really don't feel like reformating right now....grrrr....
