Internet Connection Problem is Driving Me INSANE!

JackMDS, I appreciate your help a lot.

I read your links a bit and the content of them is way over my head. From what I can understand from them, nothing in reading those links will tell me specifically how to identify and solve my particular problem as outlined in this thread.


If there is content in the links you gave that can provide the answer to my problem, then why not just tell me the answer directly so I can go ahead identify can solve this problem?

Your posts and the content of the links you provide are not really dumbed-down enough for me so that I can understand them or how they relate to my problem. It's my fault for being too much of a layman.

I don't ever "lose connection" in that I get disconnected. My connection is just always really screwed up, albeit connected 100% of the time. I do not know if that equals "keeping the connection alive" or not.

I'm still having this problem as of today.

I was finally able to borrow my friend's laptop computer for a couple of days so that I could test my connection with a "known good PC".

The speeds test I do with that or on my PC are identical. However at this particular moment my speed tests are producing normal results, albeit when I play online games the pings are still horrendous.

My friend has cable Internet. When he pinged google.com at his house with his laptop, the highest ping response he got was 9ms.

When I ping google.com at my place using the same laptop and my 3.0 Mbps Internet connection, the lowest ping I get is 44ms.

I need to know what is a "normal" ping rate to google.com for a 3.0 Mbps ADSL phone line connection?

Also when I do traceroutes they start at around 1.257ms at the first hop and by the last hop they are always around 61.721ms. Is that "normal"? I need to know what normal traceroute results for a connection of this type should be.

I only have use of my friend's laptop for a couple of days. Can you guys please help me by telling me how to use his laptop to isolate for sure whether this is a PC issue or a phone line issue?

That is normal. More often than not, cable and DSL routes will vary. Meaning, your friend has cable and perhaps his packets go one route (like how you can have several routes to the local shopping mall) and it is the shortest where as your DSL connection takes the longer route or one of the areas that it is taking is highly congested with traffic.
