Internet connection problems

I just got back my old PC from my brother, b/c he bought a new one for school. I tried to hook it up to my cable modem, and i cant connect to the internet. Im on my other computer which is hooked up to the hub we have. I tried connecting it directly to the cable modem and its not detecting it. What could it be? I tried uninstalling my network devices and reinstalling but it still doesnt work.


Any ideas??

silly question, have you installed the modem drivers? it happened to friend of mine. would'nt connect. jer

Does your cable company register IPs by mac address? Sure sounds like it.

Every LAN card has it's own identity...the MAC address. Perhaps your cable company has things set up so you can't change LAN cards. Have you tried unplugging the cable modem, and letting it redetect your new system?

going to go and try that now. i know i havent done that yet.

i just tried it, and it didnt work.

I have two connections in my network places. One is a "broadcom 4211 iLine(tm) network adaptor" and the other is "3com etherlink xl 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3c905b-tx)"

The broadcom one is disconnected and says there is a network cable unplugged, and the 3com is the NIC I installed a long time ago and it says its connected fine.

I uninstalled both and reinstalled them, and im running out of ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would contact your cable company...perhaps they have things set up so you can't switch to a different NIC card without getting things reset on their end. Also, if you aren't using that NIC that is disconnected, I would remove all traces of it...it shouldn't interfere with your connection, but you never know.

called the cable company they have no idea what im talking about and said it should work fine.

any other ideas?

You should check your ip. Maybe he had to have a fixed ip address at school that is out of range for your dhcp server assuming you have dhcp turned on.
