Internet Connection- Weird Issue

I recently reformatted (read today) a computer with Windows XP.

I re-installed all the standard drivers: video, sound and network. Installed SP3, installed anti-virus + firewall.

The motherboard is a Asus P5RD2-VM. I got the network driver directly from the asus website, from the motherboard page. Realtek RTL8111b 10/100/1000M LAN Driver Version 5.652.627.2006

While the machine was already running, I plugged into the ethernet port on the back directly from the modem (broadband cable).

It made the connection, I connected to the Internet, I started downloading Windows updates after activating Windows.

Upon restart, it came back with "limited connectivity", I'd lost my connection for some reason. I tried repairing the connection, but it couldn't reaquire an IP address. It was assigning me an automatic private IP address (169.254.x.x)

I restarted the machine, same deal. Reset the modem, same deal.

Then I unplugged the network cable, restarted the machine and didn't plug the cable back in until Windows had started. It got the connection no problem, normal IP address and away I went.

Problem is, if I restart the computer, back to square one, "limited connectivity", an automatic private IP address.

Any ideas as to the problem, or what I should try?

You are probably missing a windows protocol or have a corrupted TCP/IP stack.

Download a winsock fix program, and rebuild your winsock. Then make sure you have TCP/IP, client for windows networks, and file and printer sharing for microsoft networks all checked and installed.

I have a wireless router and I also have a wireless laptop. I want to get my xbox connected downstairs to Live and I was wondering if I could use my wireless internet connection to connect to the router and then send a crossover cable from the laptops ethernet port to the xbox. I thought it would be easy but when I try to share my laptops internet connection it says another thing is already using auto matic ip address the router is what i think it is refering to. I dont think this is a standard setup but if anyone knows what I am talking about I would like to know if it is possible. thnaks

I know with my win 7 that the realtek drivers are bad. I have the same issue. Every time I start my PC I need to load device manager and disable and then enable the adapter and that fixes the problem. I am hoping they fix their driver soon. I am hoping fixed drivers eventually get put up on windows update. Give that a try and see if that is the same problem.

Try to give the computer a static IP.

I took a second look and it turns out that the driver I got from the Mobo manufacturer, was actually from 2006. I only went through there because I didn't know what the card exactly was at the time.

I got the latest driver directly from Realtek and it's working like it should.

There seems to be a problem with your internet. Check with your service provider.
