Internet cutting out -- what's the problem?

I've got SBC DSL internet up here (Berkeley, Bay Area Calif.). It cuts out much too often for my liking, at least once every week. I can connect to my router just fine, sometimes it has difficult resolving IP addresses and whatnot.

Any thoughts? Is it the router, ISP, or something else?

Well now the problem is at least once every 48 hours. What could it be?

There's way to many variables for us to answer this question, the first thing I would do is elimiante the router and see if this keeps happening if it does you know its your isp, possibly a DNS issue but this could be your modem or router or a host of other things and without more details on exactly whats wrong theirs not alot we can do.

OK I'm getting a Linksys 54g to replace this Netgear 54g WG614v3. Upon further inspection, the router seems to be able to resolve an IP address, DNS, connection to the internet just fine; however, pages seem to take an indefinite amount of time to load (they don't load). I don't get a "Cannot resolve URL" message just "Searching for Google.com..." message.

The router says I'm connected to the Internet. Any ideas?

Edit: A little more about my connection. I set up an access card list, which allows only certain MAC addresses to access the internet via my router, and don't broadcast the name. As a result, I don't have any security passwords and whatnot. Could this be affecting the internet somehow?

What's your modem? Some SBC modems (2wire something) are actually routers as well, so if you try to network with a router/access point, then you'll be doing a router to router connection, which will cause pages to not load.

Speedstream. I've had it for over 2 years now and it worked fine until a few weeks ago.

My Speedstream 5360 did the same thing until I got a WRT54G. My Netgear routers (an RT314 and later an MR814) would lose the connection at random intervals and I'd have to reset the modem.

this same problem happens to me, i'll be playign BF2 and usddenly, "lost connection to server" So it might be the router? I would LOVE to get the many points i'm not gettign due to this problem, can't get the points if you don't finish the round =(

Even resetting the modem and router, going into the router CP and telling it to "Connect," which it would successfully, would still result in very sluggish, unusuable internet. Interestingly enough, packets were being sent and received, and in large quantities.

The first thing you EVER do when diagnosing a problem like this is BYPASS YOUR ROUTER. You have no idea how many worthless calls are generated to tech support because people don't take the time to diagnose their own equipment. Then run some ping tests to check for latency and packet loss.
