One of my mother's friends (female/50's) asked me - "the computer expert" (yeah, right) - about her posting a personal ad on the 'net.

Well, I did a "search" and came up with far more info than I care to wade through.

Anybody here know anything about this? Is it safe (I doubt it)? Are there reliable advertising sites - any suggestions where to start?

Edit: Doesn't this seem a little weird to you - Internet dating? Any success stories? It would seem like the odds are way stacked against you.

I would suggest searching for a website which specifically caters to her age group. The statistics for online dating are against her but there are those few exceptions.

since I have no possible information to help you, I'll stray slightly:

1) dont you hate when people come to the 'computer expert' in the family for advice on something obscure and unknown to you? as if you control all the information flowing through the internet and can get information telepathically like the agents in the Matrix?

2) Uh, hate to burst your bubble, but for people in their 50s it's a thinning pool, but I wish her good luck anyway.

She's 58 and Japanese. Too old for me, though.

HOW do you go about finding a good website (particularly in this area) that is reliable?

I was going to suggest the LA Times classified which has their ads on the web (S.Cali).

Now that you mention it, yes. Good think I have my extended family here to ask.

She must be or else she wouldn't ask me to post a personal ad on the 'net for her. Unfortunately she doesn't have a computer (or else she could get her information telepathically like we do).

Muaaaaahahahaha, Muaaaaaaahahahaha, ROTFLMFAO. As the Scottish would say: "That's a wee ripper!" We don't want the bandwidth to get chewed up.

Ummm, no advice here.

Yeah, tell her to stop being sopathetic and go out and meet real people or get herself one of those nasty French Poodles and a can of dog food.

So what sites did you use - the better ones?

I am not worried about her disappointments. Her mind is made up. I am just helping her with what she is determined to do. I will again warn her.

From what I see, she MUST have and use a computer for best results. She just wanted to place a personal ad.

It seems kindof strange that there are so few replies.

Did I hit some kind of nerve? Or just apathy?

Is there anyone on the "afternoon shift" that has opinions/ideas for where to start. I am pointing her toward the Classified Section, "Personals" of the LA Times. I believe they have a good 'net presence.

I've been doing it for a few years which I guess tells you what the odds are like. I've gone on quite a few dates but have yet to form any lasting relationships. To use the service I'm registered with you pretty much have to have access to a computer. Parties are first hooked up using e-mail so if you don't have an e-mail account you can't use the system.

Here's the link

Oh they do actually work once and awhile. I know two couples that met this way.

try the KBIG 104.3 radio station's dating line.. something she can use.

else try love.aol.com , match.com - They are the two better ones.
adultfriendfinder.com is also ok... but I dont like it.

I have met quite a few people off the internet. Some like my relationship with cecilia is purely friendship while others like with anita (my ex gf - yes we first met online at the online chat for that class) we dated and then things went down the drain.

It can work.. its just a matter of finding a person willing to open up. I have quite a few internet friends who I have met thru online sites (not personals).. but the fact of the matter is that its worth a try.

Hrmm... internet dating which will in turn result in a real relationship. Ok, I'm going to share a few stories with you about my experiences with this.

Back in the good ol days of the internet sometime around 1995 a friend of mine brought over a floppy disk and said "this is going to change your life". So what was it? Yep... good ol mIRC. He opened up the world of chatting on the computer to anyone in the world. How cool is this! So I would spend all my waking hours meeting other people my age and chatted most of my mid-teens doing such. During this time I had met a girl who lived in Toronto, Canada. I live in Michigan. We talked A LOT and eventually sent a few snail-mails and included pictures. Once the pictures were sent we grew even closer, and we really wanted to meet eachother. Being 5 hours away that isn't a simple task. I convinced my parents to take a weekend and go to Toronto cuz I had never been. Then I also told them I knew someone and wanted to go to the mall where we chould meet up.

So... we met, things were good, the sparks started to fly and we talked more. Used the phone, used letters, used email... etc. Then I would drive to Toronto once a month or maybe twice and spend the weekend at her place. (Now that I think of it I was only 16 at the time and I can't believe my parents let me drive to another country and stay with a stranger... scary) and sometimes she would take the train here and stay with us. To make this short... we were dating for a good 2 years or so. It was very hard with the distance and being so young... so it eventually fizzled out.

Now, call me crazy (or maybe just a geek) but I still used IRC once in high school and went to a local channel where people from michigan always hung out. Met this girl on there who happened to live only 10 minutes away. We talked a lot online... then eventually decided to meet somehow, and did. That turned out really well and we continued dating for nearly 7 months. We seperated when we both graduated and were heading to different Universities....

Lastly I bring you to the last example I've had. Once I came to college my roomates had a fantasy football league starting up, and I signed up. We did a lot of it through email/ICQ so we had to get everyone's info. Out of this group of about 20-25 people, there was one girl. I didn't see her, but I had her ICQ number. So one friday night when my roomates left me bored and alone I decided to chat. She was also home and we talked until 4 in the morning. The next day, chatted again for hours. So, we figured before we made any "trades" we should go to a movie or something. So we did... and now it has been over 3 years and we are still happily together and will be getting married in less than 2 years.

I don't know how that relates to your question, but just some examples showing the internet CAN work for meeting people and it isn't always some scary freak on the other side! I'm not sure about those internet ads people put in, but hey, it could work.

If it works for you . . .

Thanks for the rest of your replies. I will pass the info on to her. If she wants to get a computer, fine. If not, I certainly don't want to have anything to do with this for her.

My best friend met her husband over the internet, and they've now been married for over three years. It does work for some.
