Internet Dev Ques: Content Manager Help!

Hey,

I'm developing a content manager, but i'm a little bit lost as to the "proper" method of building it. What i have developed so far is a database driven manager, it retrieves and stores the data in the database. However what I have come to realize from looking at other sites is that other content managers are more file based (or soo it seems).

I'm really unclear as to how a content manager should store and retrieve information. I'm also having problems figuring out how to set-up a proper hierarchical structure.

Any type of information regarding content managers would be really useful as I am fairly new to this development. Also what type of cheap or opensource content managers are available?

If you anticipate you will have > 4GB of content and are using a 32-bit platform (wintel) then you should probably use a file based system, otherwise just store everything in the DB. It'll be much easier later on.

As for file structure, it all depends on the content... alphabetically and hierarchically (26 top level folders, 3 - 10 2nd level folders, etc) is pretty common I think. Time based might also be a good way, but then you have a continually growing file structure. I think we need more info about your content.
