If you install IE10 on Win7, you also have the option of enabling Enhanced Protected Mode. On 64-bit versions (which I imagine is the majority of AnandTech readers), this uses 64-bit tab processes to enhance the randomness of ASLR. The Enhanced Protected Mode checkbox is in Internet Options > Advanced tab.

If you mainly use a different browser, it's still a good idea to upgrade IE if you have it enabled at all, since some of its code could be called via, say, Office. If you don't like IE10, you should (famous last words) be able to uninstall it via Control Panel > Programs and go back to IE9.

Great! thank you. Will this install over the beta version?

Also, in ie9, the 32bit version had a faster engine. Do you know if the 64 bit version is faster in ie10?

How can I verify if Im running the 64bit version of IE?

If you go to Help -> About Internet Explorer it will tell you if you are running the 64-bit version.

But Windows 7 comes with both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of ie and by default it uses the 32-bit unless you manually launch the 64-bit shortcut or set the 64-bit version as default

And if you don't want it, don't worry... Microsoft will try to install it anyway as a "recommended security update" next month.

Installed 64 bit, works ok, still use FF though since it has a free ad-block.

I followed the links on Microsoft's site and it upgraded to 10. Although I can't seem to find the 64 bit version anymore? In IE 9 I had a shortcut to both in my Start Menu. How do you launch the 64 bit version?

I have not installed ie10 but for ie9 the location for the 2 versions are as follows
32-bit -- C: \Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe
64-bit -- C: \Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplorer.exe

so I would assume it would be the same for IE10

Enable Enhanced Protected Mode and the tab processes should now run in 64-bit so they can use high-entropy ASLR.

I downloaded and installed it on 3 systems. One of the slickest upgrades ever! It preserved all my custom links, icons, etc. A tip of the hat to MS!

Installed and works fabulously on a Dell XPS420 2.67 gigahertz Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 4GB RAM desktop w/Windows 7 64 bit

Takes a dump every time I open the browser on a HP Pavilion dv6t 2.2 GHz, i7-2670QM 8 GB RAM laptop w/Windows 7 64 bit, which I don't have imaged so I don't want to experiment too much trying to find out if it's java, flash or Symantec Endpoint protection related. It has the same software configuration as the Dell with the exception of the factory installed HP stuff required for the laptop. I uninstalled 10 and went back to 9 and stopped the blue screening.

Any suggestions?

What is the error message in the blue screen? That may help.

Also does anyone happen to know when IE10 will appear on windows update?

Foolishly, I didn't make note of the number even after three times, there were a lot of sixes in a row and my past experience has mostly yielded the generic message to uninstall any new software, hardware and hints at memory failure etc...

Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems Download size: 69.1 MB is showing up as an optional update dated February 26 in Windows updates along with a Platform update.

DO NOT INSTALL IT IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING COMPUTERS

It should still be listed in the system event viewer right?

Still no word on advanced updates http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin Most are speculating that it will be recommended next update Tuesday

Thanks, forgot about that, I haven't had the need to use that since XP and thought I'd cleared it after a check disk and defrag. I didn't, everything is in there. I feel a learning curve up ahead. I have the "critical" entry where I had to do the hard shutdown, preceded by "info" entries some of which there is no online info for, a plug n play device error from removing the mouse and switching to the touchpad. AND now it's crashing while I'm trying to work through the event viewer with a page fault to a non-paged area message. DAMN it keeps crashing. Probably not an IE10 thing. I'll take it elsewhere. Thanks for your help.

So, is IE10 64bit all the way? I don't see a difference in the 'About,' nor did it give me a choice when I downloaded it.

From what I can see, it isn't much different... except...

IE10 finally has a built-in spellchecker

THAT!!!

Problem installing IE10 on some computers

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2823483

This is the problem on my laptop HP Pavilion DV6

KB2670838 was the "platform" update that caused my bluescreening. It was an additional download that Windows Update forced me to install during my manual installation of IE10. This update remained after I uninstalled IE10 and I had to manually uninstall it ...to finally stop the crashing! My life is a day shorter having wasted the better part of it chasing this gremlin. It's kind of ironic that Bill Gates is saving lives in third world countries and Microsoft is killing us off slowly in minutes and hours. I'm done ...not gonna rant ...anymore ...at least until the next time

I'll have to check the case of Win7, but I believe the quick answer is that on 64-bit Windows, IE10's manager process runs 64-bit, but tabs default to 32-bit (except the Metro-style IE10). If you enable Enhanced Protected Mode, which is a checkbox in the Advanced tab of the Internet Options panel, then your tab processes will switch to 64-bit for increased ASLR entropy (and on Win8 they'll also be individually sandboxed in AppContainers).

For a long answer, here's the full explanation as it applies to Win8. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ieinternals...rk-security-addons-cookies-metro-desktop.aspx

Short answer approved!

I don't use tabbed browsing, anyway.

Just checking but it should be fine if I mark the check boxes for all the TLS options under advanced options right?

(I think you have the choice of 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2)
