Internet Explorer. It gives me screen and in that it is written the program
has perform illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists
contact system administrator. I tried to restart the computer. It gives me
the error. The program is not responding. It may be busy waiting a response
from you or it may have stopped running. I will appreciate your suggestions

Unfortunately Win98 is no longer supported or sold by Microsoft. Too bad you didn't spring for a new OS.

Well that was a sh1tty answer if you ask me. Just because MS doesn't support it doesn't mean we can't help him out.

Anywho to answer your question is this a new install of Windows 98? Have you loaded a newer version of IE on there yet?

I have to agree.. Thorin, take advice from Thumper.. if you cant say something nice, don't say anything at all. That type or remark is totally unnecessary here.

As for the posters problem, Try reinstalling IE6 again ( download the whole kit and kaboodle from Microsquish ) and see if that fixes the illegal opperation problem. Its possible that when it was last installed something went fubar. happens sometimes.

Of course, letting us know if this is a new install of the OS ( just win98, not 98SE? ) would help as well. if its that new of an install, just format and start over.

You can download IE6 separately with all the files downloaded and on a CD, reinstall it, and that should fix it.

Who gives a rats ass what MS supports, ya gotta fix what ya gotta fix.

First off, if this is a clean install, what hardware are you running and what patches have you applied?

Interesting ... you talked (flamed) didn't you? Take yer own advice dude
<yawn> Oh and mikecel79 no one asked, but thanks for the input anyway

Did he say he even had IE6? (Doubtful since he said he did a 98 install
) Not to mention that you assume since he's posted here he has another browser from which he can download another version of IE to install. On top of which you obviously assume he has a CD burner or network access to the other system in order to copy his newly acquired copy of IE isntaller (or is interested in wasting hours upon hours copying it to multiple floppies and back to the other sys). Further you assume his system specs are sufficient for IE6 (and it huge bloat)..... Need I continue?

My original point was perhaps not entirely PC (Politically Correct) but at least I didn't make a bunch of assumptions. I simply offered information which may (or may not be .... but that's his choice not yours) be of relevance to the person posing the quesiton. (If he's having that much trouble there's a high probability he would want a supported OS ... though that's an assumption as well). If upgrading to a newer OS wasn't an option then that's up to him to tell us. At which point it'd be best for us to find out the specs of the system in question and perhaps suggest a lighter weight browser that is more suited to his system.

Ya, I've found 2000 to work on any PC 'designed' for win98 and has lots of drivers already in it.

Ya, I'll second using Mozilla instead.

At any rate, risking a thread hijack, anyone know where Win 98 updates/patches can be found? My bro is trying to fix an old computer and keeps getting a BS. I suspect an Update/Patch for Win 98 will fix it.

Sorry to turn this into a bash back at thorin, but my remark was said as a joke ( hence I use smily faces ) yours was said to be a jerk.

Wow, amazing that.

If you cannot be helpful then please don't bother responding and wating bandwith.. IE ( whee, not the browser ) go away.

Sorry that we cant be more helpful, sakalloo, though others are right. If Mozilla/Firebird doesn't work, or a new install of 98 wont cut it, you may have to bite a bullet and upgrade. Its a pain and a bit expensive, but worth it in the end.

You can still get them at Windows Update. You should able to in the future too. I believe it's only phone support and new patches MS will not be making. Old patches will still be available to you.

Did you join this forum just to criticize other people's posts? Because if you did I believe you belong in OT. And you really shouldn't be talking, Thorin has helped this forum a lot more than you have and if you think he is "wasting bandwith" maybe you should direct your attention to his elite membership. They don't give those to anyone just so you know and clueless n00b's really shouldn't try to be a moderator. Also sakalloo8248 next time I would suggest you use the "operating systems" or software forum...

OMG don't suggest upgrading or that perhaps 98 is not a good choice anymore that's not helpful
People will tell u to stop posting because you aren't being helpful, and then claim that they were joking and you shoulda known because of the smileys they never used. <yawn>

Give Mozilla.org a visit from another system, download the browser and try it on Windows 98.

Windows 98 is supposed to have a Internet Explorer repair feature once you've upgraded it to version 6.x , somewhere on Microsoft.com

Can you give anymore details? Anything installed lately?
