I need some help with Internet Explorer. It's about to drive me nuts. The best way I can explain it is to go to www.bluesnews.com. At the top of the page there is a banner. All mine shows is a box with a red X in it. I also tried crazy browser and it does the samething. On my other computer is is fine. Anyone got any ideas.

Thanks in advance

Sounds like the hosts file may be messed up.

Or not messed up...some programs intentionally put bad addresses in hosts for big advertising comanies so you will get blank windows like that where ads should be or when a pop up ad shows up, you'll just get a blank window instead.

Look in your HOSTS file and see whats in there.

I can see other pictures. I think most of the problems are with GIFS and banners. If I right click on the banner and select properties it says No page to display, Protocol Unknown Protocol. Type Not Available
Adress (URL) res//C:\\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/navcancl.htm#http://mediamgr.ugo.com

What ever all the means.

Thanks jfunk. I went to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and renamed the host file to hostold. Now I can see gifs and the banners. How in the world would I find out what is missed up in the host file?

Yeah, just look at the hosts file in notepad.

Basically, it's gonna have web addresses, and a default IP for them, where your system will look for them instead of searching for it.

Some anti-popup/ad software will insert a bunch of entries in there for many ad companies and point them back to your machine (the localhost IP), so your browser will be unable to find those sites.

Thus, instead of connecting to said site, it comes up with a not found, since it cannot locate the requested file on your system.
