I have an SBS2003 platinum server, an adsl dynamic IP and want to make my own web page and host it here. I'm just going to be posting a few pages with small jpgs and text. My bandwidth will be more than enough for the few hits I'll be getting. What is the best way to go about getting a domain name and having a method for directing it to a changing IP?

I already have a free dyndns dynamic account to point to my rdc machine. so I'm familiar with setting up that part of it, but they charge 15$ a year for a domain, and 25$ a year for the custom dns pointing. I'd like to get by cheaper than that if possible.

The cheapest domain registration I could find was $5 (.us) at godaddy.com, but couldn't find anything there for dynamic dns registration.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I use zoneedit.com. Its free for dynamic DNS and they also offer a number of other features at a small cost, such as a mail server failover...etc

Thanks, I've heard nothing but good things about godaddy.com, they are actually a registrar. I've sent them an e-mail asking about the On line domain controller and the ability to transfer my domain to other dns hosts.

(the .us domains are on sale for 4.95 a year, the .com domains are 8.95)

any suggestions on a domain registration company or bad things about godaddy are welcome. all my info on this was found from doing searches on anandtech's forums. I'm in no hurry to get this done. and I'm the type who likes to do things right the 1st time.

I've found some info in the hot deals forums that suggests 1and1 is a good solution

Stay far far away from 1 and 1. They suck and RossMAN has also agreed that registering domains there is not a good idea. I personally use namecheap

Excellent choice NameCheap.com is by far my favorite domain registrar (although GoDaddy.com is the #1 domain registrar and ICANN accreditted).

They are working great, I'm using thier Dynamic DNS utility to point my domain to my DSL line and am hosting my site already....see sig line, now I just need to learn HTML a little better to improve the look of my site, but the information I need is there and it's small enough to not bog down my upload from my servers I-net connection.

Don't believe what you hear about 1and1. I've had them since they first came out, and I have never had any problems what-so-ever. I also registered a domain name with them, and haven't had any problems with that either. I also use godaddy, and they are great as well.
