Internet is constantly going down

For the past few months my internet has been crashing when I go to certain websites. So far, I've noticed it's usually sites that have side-scrolling ads. Anandtech is one of them as is Ebay and any number of news pages. There are certain sites I can go to and have zero problems and there are some I can go to and it will knock my internet out for up to five minutes.

I've called Comcast several times and they've basically told me my internet is fine and that it's all on my end. I run an anti Malware program as well as Ad-Aware weekly. Is it a possibility that I may have some kind of virus that these programs aren't picking up?

It doesn't really "hang up" I just can't load any new pages for about 5 minutes. I've been on games before while it happened and I wasn't kicked off or noticed any real slow down either.

By "Internet has been crashing", what do you mean? Internet Explorer has been crashing? Just one computer can't use Internet Internet Explorer or Firefox for five minutes? Or your home/office loses its entire Internet connection and no computers can get to the Internet?

I can not use Firefox period during the time it's "down". It won't kick me off games but at the same time I can not connect to any game either. My PS3 will not be able to connect to the internet either during this time.

What happens if you reset your router during the outage? does it restore service? I am assuming your computer is not directly plugged into the cable modem.

Nothing happened when I reset the router but I went ahead and hooked the PC straight to the modem and I haven't had a problem yet. I assume the router is screwed in some way?

I've got everything running through the router again and the internet just seems slower than it was with just the modem hooked straight to the PC. I even ran a speed test on the PS3 with the router connected and got 11.4mbps Down and 2.2mbps Up. That seems pretty terrible.

Cut off power to the modem, router, and computer. Connect the LAN port from the modem to one of the WAN ports of the Router (there should be 4 of them). Connect another WAN port to the ethernet port on the computer. Power on the modem first, followed by the router and computer. This should operate the router under switch mode. Report back and tell us whether you have the same issues.

I think perhaps you have that backwards? There are not 4 WAN ports on a router, there is ONE "WAN" port and usually four LAN ports.

I couldn't even connect to the internet doing this. I currently have the modem connected to what I can assume is the WAN port, it only says "Internet", and the PC and PS3 connected to the first two LAN ports.

This is 100% identifiable as an issue with your browser.

If you do not get kicked offline of the game, you did not lose your internet connection. It's as simple as that. No need to troubleshoot your internet connection... your router... your ISP or anything else.

You most likely have a bad plugin or a BHO that is corrupt causing you issues.

I would bet its a corrupt javascript or flash install, since it's ads that you identified as causing issues... those ads are java/flash based.

Easiest thing to do is rollback your OS to a day before it stopped working.

If that's true then how would you explain why the internet works perfectly fine with zero interruptions when I run it straight through the modem with no router at all?

And I'm not definite on the ads being the cause of the problem... it was just an assumption of mine.

I'm not just imagining the internet working fine when it's straight through the modem, it really does. If that's even what you're referring to.

no.. what's he's saying is it would run fine at that moment no matter what... the fact you're running thru the modem doesn't make a difference.

I understand that but the fact is that every single time I visit these certain sites my internet goes to shit. I visit these sites daily btw. The one night I ran it straight through the modem I never had a single problem. I left it that way for at least an hour. As soon as I hooked the router back up the problems came back up.

That's way too big of a coincidence for me to believe it's just a "placebo effect".

How can a bad browser prevent his PS3 from connecting?

So, I decided to check some feedback on Newegg for the router I have now and what do you know...

"Connections will drop if you try any file sharing, torrents, network games, or video streams. Although at lower level bandwidth usage connections are still solid."

"I have had this router for about a year. I connect my xbox and my pc to this router. This router cannot maintain a good connection. I thought it was my cable connection, but I connected my cable modem directly to my computer and what do you know, internet issues disappeared."

"From day one this router dropped connections constantly. Once you restart it the speeds are good, but several minutes later I feel like I am on a dial up connection, sometimes pages just don't load at all."

Stay away from the D-Link EBR-2310 wired router!

Maybe there is a setting for network Lag. I use to use TV Cable Internet as a provider. When I Switched to DSL I got a lot less lag and interruptions. I did not use the lowest Speed of DSL. I selected a level on network speed that was 2 levels up from the lowest level (AT&T).
