Rejection turns to 'murder' after TV proposal snub

A Spanish man whose estranged Russian girlfriend rejected his marriage proposal on television was remanded in custody on Thursday on suspicion that he stabbed her to death just days later. A judge in the eastern city of Alicante did not charge Ricardo Navarro with any crime but ordered that he be held behind bars while the investigation continues, his lawyer Jorge Roman told reporters after the preliminary hearing.
The woman, identified only as Svetlana, was found with her throat cut in the entrance of her apartment in Alicante on Sunday and she died in hospital two days later. She is survived by a young daughter from another relationship.
The stabbing came four days after a weeping Navarro bent down on his knees before Svetlana and presented her with a wedding ring on daytime talk show Diario de Patricia which regularly draws two million viewers.
"You are everything for me, without you I am nothing. I want to live with you forever," he said during the show taped on November 14 and broadcast later that same day on private channel Antena 3. Svetlana, also 30, looked on in silence as the man made his proposal, saying only "no" when the show's host Patricia Gaztanaga pressed her for a reply.
Navarro told the court that he was at his parents' house on the night his ex-girlfriend was killed, his lawyer said. The case has revived accusations that talk shows exploit the emotions of participants without regard for their well-being after it was reported that Svetlana had requested a restraining order against Navarro in the past and did not know he would be taking part in the show.
"You can't trick a woman into meeting her abuser, because this is the consequence," Ana Maria Perez del Campo, of the Federation of Separated and Divorced Women, told private radio Cadena Ser. Gaztanaga expressed sorrow for the victim at the start of yesterday's show but said her murder could not have been foreseen.
"They were here a week ago and none of us who knew their story could imagine that something as dramatic as this could happen," she said before cutting to a commercial break as sombre piano music played in the background. It is not the first time that a talk show with a focus on personal conflicts between its guests has been blamed for murder.
In 1995 a man in the United States shot and killed a friend who had confessed he was sexually attracted to him on The Jenny Jones Show. The victim's family successfully sued producers of the show who were ordered to pay $US25 million ($28 million) in damages. An appeals court later overturned the ruling on the grounds that producers were not responsible for what happened to the guests after they appeared on the show.
