internet sharing with ATTBI.com

Okay.. I am moving in with someone who already has attbi.com. One of us will have to give up our account since ATTBI will only allow one account per household. So my question is this. In order for us to share the bandwidth do I need a router or hub? Will I also need to pay for a second IP address for ATTBI or does the router or hub have the main address and I set up addresses on the seperate computers?

You'll need a router...

the router will take the one main IP address, and use that, and your computers will both get sub-ip's... (private IP's)

Will a router be able to automatically obtain an IP as opposed to having a static IP? Because attbi requires that the IP be obtained from them each time you power up your modem.

Yes. Plus you'll probably get a hardware firewall.

When setup correctly (can't say for your version) on the new router, AT&T just thinks that the router is one PC, and works perfectly. Then each PC attached to the other side of the router (up to 255 PC's using switches or hubs for more than 4 or 8, whatever your router is) gets its IP address from the router. Thats why it is called a router. It is a DHCP host, and hands out IP addresses dynamically.

You can also just pay 5 dollars extra per month for an extra ip if you don't want to buy a router. You will need a cheap hub though.

that way if you get another computer later on, you just plug that one in too and not have to worry about IP addy's...

On the flip side though, a router can introduce issues. If you're hosting a game of UT, for example, the router, unless configured otherwise, might deny the packets, since it doesn't know who they belong to. In essence, a private router is great to draw from the internet, but is lousy to give back with.

In linksys routers, they have port forwarding so you can forward port 21 to a static IP behind router for FTP access. If you wanted 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.3 to.....

In UT, can you set the port to work on? That way you can forward those ports to the individual computers running them...that'd werk.

Simplest and cheapest would be to network the two computers and use software routing, like ICS, and a software firewall.

the problem Ive found with ICS is the second computer that hooks to the main computer is getting the royal shaft bandwidth wise. I let xp set it up itself.. so Im not really sure why its a problem.
