Internet Speeds and Performance

Hello,

I work from my laptop and I was wondering how much difference I would see with an increase in download/upload speed when it comes to my performance times.

I currently having a 5mbs dl / 0.5 mbs ul speed.

What I am currently doing:

-Connecting to 3 or 4 devices remotely. -Browsing though dozens of various webpages per hour.

Would upgrading to a faster connection improve the performance of connecting to the devices remotely or improve the browsing experience of websites? I tried using my phone to connect to mobile hotspot, which has a much faster speed. I didn't see much difference between the remote desktop connection and browsing speeds. But, I wasn't sure if there was any concrete way to test this.

I've been doing some reading on the ideal internet speeds for remote connection. But, wasn't sure how it would be impacted with multiple connections running and browsing from my own browser at the same time.

Thanks!

After 5mb/s it's primarily improvements to loading of video streaming/downloads. If you are already happy and the cost is so much more to move to a higher tier, then I wouldn't bother.

So, after 5 mb/s, there would be no noticeable difference in web browsing or using remote desktops? What if there are other users using the internet, would that then possibly warrant a higher connection speed to get the best performance out of what I am doing?

And thank you for your response.

It really just depends on the habits of the users.

Low end basic web browsing with no real media streaming will be fine with 2-3 users at those speeds. However, throw in a single 720p youtube stream on that and you're already hitting 3-4mbps+.

In my house it isn't unusual to have 4 1080p streams at once, that is a good ~20mbps+ depending what services you're streaming from. A single 4k stream can be 25mbps.
As for remote desktop, it really depends on what OS we're talking about, but you shouldn't have too much issues with a handful of clients. More bandwidth would give you breathing room to expand if need be however, and allow for more intensive web use while doing other things without worry of your bandwidth hitting a limit.

Depends on how you're connecting to the remote devices too, and where they are. If they are all on your local network and you're using Windows Remote Desktop, you're probably not hitting the internet at all, except for the web pages your accessing, just connecting from your laptop to your router and straight to your devices. On the other hand if you're using a web based service (Google Remote Desktop, Teamviewer, LogMeIn, etc.) and the devices are local, you've got a connection out from you laptop to the internet service and another connection in from the internet service to the remote devices, so you're using twice the expected bandwidth. And no matter what software/service you're using, if the devices are not local, you also have to consider what the connection is like at the other end where the remote devices are.

As far as 5mb/s I agree with mnewsham. It should be servicable, but maybe a little slow. But if the web browsing your doing involves a bunch of pages with flash or ads or streaming media, I can see it being a very laggy connection where it doesn't feel like you're staying connected - moving the mouse but it's not moving on the remote machine, clicking things but they're not getting clicked, etc.

There is more than one factor at work here. if you're browsing just a website or surfing memes on fb or reddit like i often do, it's gonna go smoothly. if there is more than one user doing the same, it's gonna be a bit slow but not really a deal-breaker. if, however, you're streaming an HD vid over youtube, you'll soon find it will only be a lag-less experience only if you're the only one streaming through that connection. also, just forget more than one user streaming anything simultaneously over that connection. if anyone sharing the connection also plays games, like multiplayer types, ping is going to be unbearable. huge updates, that are pretty common today, are going to be another issue with this connection. that would mean missed headshots in shooters, misexecutions in fighters and whatnot
