Internet speeds

I currently have Wireless radio internet, at a speed of what I think is 256 up, and 512 down, and I am abloe to play games online quite well. I have found though, that my house now has DSL available, and since I have had trouble with my Wireless internet, I have been thinking of switching. The phone company offers 256 up, and 256 down for $35. Also, 256 up, and 600-something down for $50.

If I were to change to the 256-up, 256-down DSL, will my ping on multiplayer games skyrocket? Or would I still be within the manageable latency? I would much rather get the $35 DSL than the $50.

Thanks.

Comcast cable is phenomenal.....I was downloading some MP3last night and I was hitting 2-2.5Mb/s.....I believe the surface claims I can hit 4Mb/s

If it was the same speed I would drop cable for dsl if the price was cheaper, but I don't want to lose bandwidth. $50 a month is about my limit, but I don't want cheaper at the sacrifice of bandwidth. So, until Verizon offers FIOS in my area, I will stick with cable internet. It's a much better value to me as I value bandwidth over price.

Sounds way too expensive. Are you sure those speeds are correct?
Bellsouth DSL:
1.5 Mbps = $38/month
3.0 Mbps = $50/month
And Bellsouth is actually kind of expensive.

Comcast charges about that much. I'm paying $40 a month -- and that's the rate for digital cable subscribers.

Yea, cable is usually slightly cheaper if you are a digital subscriber. I have Direct TV though, so that's why I went with DSL. But 3.0 Mbps for $50 is good enough fo me.

Right...We switched our land phone to comcast as well and saved 10+ bucks over verizon so I cound some of that as an offset to the cable modem....

if your a gamer, cable is a must, in new games youll get owned by someone with a 5 meg connection, and with DSL youll still get lag in some servers.....

gotta love the speed, and just try to ignore the price :-(

I have had Comcast Cable for several years, seems once they went from great too bad in my area or hub, if it rains the conection goes off or if the weather is bad in anyway I loose conection. Use to be very stabel. I think they have gotten to many subscribers in the area and are slowing the conection down.
I will finaly be move about mid may and will get DSL from Bell South, I have here many say they have better conections with DSl than cabel I hope I will be one of them. Cabel as a whole should be better but that is not always true.

wtf are you talking about? Latency is a billion time more improtant than throughput. In Games.

You are correct, but generally a High throughput connection usually has low latency aswell. But the location of the server and how far is it to u is just as important.

Here in canada Rogers Cable offers 5mbps down/ 800kbps up for $45 aslong as u purchase the modem. which is a $100 charge. But its the best cable connection in my area, and well worth the purchase of the modem. I heard they were testing out 10mpbs connections too, but when we will see them don't know yet.

Well, I think I got maybe one or two answeres in there. My problem is that I dont live in town, actually pretty far from it. My area is getting developed, but I dont expect cable to arrive any time soon. I have done research into this already, and only now has dsl become available in my area. So heres my options: Wireless Radio, or DSL. SO will the 256 up and 256 down be too painful for internet gameplay?

It's only 5 times faster than dial-up, but it will be ok for playing. If the server is close to you, you should be able to get a ping <100.

I have SBC Pro (DSL), its 3/512 for 29.99. Their basic package is 19.99. I always game at 20-30 pings.

256/256 is kind of lame, but if its the best you can do, better than dial up. Ouch.
